1st time I've left a Badger game early in 8 years. Couple of good sets then they just fell apart. Right now I'm not sure they're a top 20 team. It's tough to watch. I was one of the few that was saying Top 2/3 was too high. I was saying 8 -10 was more appropriate. But let's see what they look like when the competition gets a little less fierce. They can hopefully build good habits such as
Teaching Carter Booth how to hit
Teaching Smrek not to get blocked
Teaching our front row players how to get proper postitioning (block touch defense )
After 3 years teaching GG not to spaz in the back row
We have a load of talent but too many issues and poor depth.
can’t set into the block ,either quick or higher she is 6’9

Lola for lib please, led team in digs in 3ro & also looked very solid passing They had her play a bit of left back for a while and she looked good. Really hope they experiment with her as Libero more this season. She did quite well on serve recieve. Halter was serving her every time.

Lola for lib please, led team in digs in 3ro (16) & also looked very solid passing I don't have the stats, just eye test, it looked like both Texas and Louisville were really targeting her in SR.

Who even had a plus performance today? What can we build off of? Julia didn't even look good when she finally got placed in the front for some plays. Sheffield isn't pushing the right buttons and this two libero thing is just preventing this team from building cohesion. I'd like to see Schumacher end up getting the starting libero position. She already has chemistry with Charlie and has the range that GG does not in getting to balls. I excepted a sweep today so they exceeded my expectations but the way the last set went any progress got flushed right back down the drain. I don't have any of the stats, just going by what I felt in real time, positives include: a) Improvement from the service line compared to Tuesday. Dev particularly looked much better. b) Sheff went to CC and she immediately changed the energy. c) The Badgers don't have to play against Texas maybe ever again in 2024.

Charlie not ready yet.
Once she figures it out, it'll work nicely
Crawford can't be playing middle if you have booth and robinson healthy

Lola for lib please, led team in digs in 3ro (16) & also looked very solid passing hmm.. I was less impressed by this showing. She was running into people quite a lot. That’s probably a familiarity thing. She feels to me like a take charge BR player and I’m not sure taking charge as DS is what you need. Charlie’s setting did seem to break down third set onward. Some of it was communication or lack thereof. Once she set Sarah on the BIC when she was running a D. Other times, she was setting players who could not get where they were supposed to be, or who really were not the best option. The game seems fast to her right now. Th 0-2 loss thing is unusual, but we usually aren’t running a gauntlet of top 10 teams to begin the season. This is a good learning lesson to teach them what’s required to reach their goal. Finding serving is going to be important. Finding a good lineup is important.

Also need to preface that I was not originally overly impressed with Lola, but after today she did seem like a bright spot to me.

I was really impressed with Devyn today. Her transitions off the block were sharp, and she brought great energy to the court. When Sheff pulled her out, it didn’t seem to be performance-related. More so was about giving her a break and letting CC get some playing time.
Charlie’s sets to Carter and Anna were low today, which is something they’ll need to adjust and work on together. Sarah taking over 60 swings is INSANE. I have faith that Charlie's connection with the other hitters will improve... because it HAS to or Sarah's arm will fall off by mid season. Transitioning to a single setter system is a big shift, but with time, it will definitely improve. I thought Carly had great hands, for the few points she played.
IMO, having one dedicated libero would benefit the team, but I'm not opposed to having another player in the jersey, ready to go. We need someone consistently running the show in the back row. Saige is still finding her rhythm after rehab and redshirting, and GG had some impressive defensive plays. However, I had hoped GG would be more refined in serve receive by now. I’d suggest Lola take on L1.
Let's make the most of this season, and enjoy our vets! next year will be a major rebuilding season.

Some quick hits from Sheff to Punzel post-match: " They are where they are right now ... We’ve got work to do. We want to be in a situation where we are competing for a championship. Right now … what are we going to be when we get pushed? Tonight they upped their game and we didn’t have a response for it.”
Devyn Robinson, a fifth-year middle blocker, said the Badgers’ shortcomings in the second half of the match were more mental than physical. “Just learning that we’ve got to be tougher mentally and we’ve got to show up ready,” she said of her main takeaway. “Those last two sets, Kelly talked to us in the locker room that we lost that between our ears. In our mind and mentally we’ve just got to get tougher. And there’s no words we can say to get us there, we’ve just got to do.
Sheffield was disappointed with the play of some of his more experienced players, while at the same time, he was impressed by how his younger players stepped up. “I’m not sure our older players responded in the right way,” Sheffield said. “But the younger players, we have a lot of people on that court that were in this type of environment for the first time and I actually thought they did a really nice job.”
Freshman setter Charlie Fuerbringer struggled at times with her connections, but Sheffield said it’s be challenging to work through those issues with numerous players missing practice time because of injuries in the early going.
“Very skilled player who’s still learning her hitters and learning this offense. It’s been really tough. We had quite a few people out there today that haven’t practiced since our last match. It’s hard to learn when you’re not getting a full menu in practice. You learn and you learn situations. She’s never faced a block like that. She’s never faced a defense like that. At times when you get going in transition, she’s forgetting some of the reach that some of our players are able to have. She knows what she’s wanting to do, but establishing the habits of where that ball needs to be is a little bit different than what she’s been doing in the past. She is a fun person to get in the gym and watch film. We’ve got to give her more weapons in the practice gym more often.”
"Where are we? It’s a lineup that continues to be in flux and will continue to be.”

This team just looks dejected. There is no energy or enthusiasm. Very few smiles by the players on the court and the sidelines players are just standing around. There seems to be a significant chemistry issue going on. I've only been following Badger volleyball since 2019 but I can't remember any loss in which we were not fighting hard to the last point. We've now lost twice in a row where the team seemed relieved when it was over.
I was really surprised that Kelly called out the first-year smalls for lack of effort in the Wisconsin State Journal this morning. If they are not working hard enough as first-year players, that's a coaching failure and it is not going to be improved by calling them out in public.

Get Shrek off the court! She’s a huge liability and brings zero scoring from the right. Devyn Robinson is the true right! I’d take CC any day over Smrek. Her two hand free ball set to Tx in set 1 - horrible! Hit a freaking down call from the ground! You are 6’10!
