Avid 2.0 posted the passing stats in the match thread. Adding them here so none of us have to go back there: WISC Franklin 2.40 (48) Schumacher 2.33 (21) Orzol 2.05 (10) Damrow 1.80 (5) 2.26 as a team That’s pretty good. Actually elite from Schumacher and Franklin. I was really impressed by Franklin. A 2.26 overall passing grade should have gotten a better result except our problems were in transition. Texas was digging a lot of first attacks and it felt like the longer the point went on the less likely a badger point was.

For what it’s worth, Texas passed a 2.36, and their worst passer was Skinner with a 2.19. The improvement in passing is definitely a positive, but transition play and service pressure really need to improve for Wisconsin to have a chance in these big matches.

Sarah looked gassed by the 4th and that probably dropped her passing number a little bit. I'm surprised that Lola passed that much better than Saige but that's good! Can never have too much depth. This confirms what I thought I saw both matches - Lola’s passing numbers are far better than Damrow’s, and she made some great defensive reads as well. I remember one particular rally where she had two diving saves in a row, in different areas, that were impressive. Wisconsin didn’t win that point but she looked really good for early in her first season. Maybe she could provide some good continuity in the back court if she were to take one of the L spots. What do we think?

I had pegged schumacher to make a difference this year. I’d like to see her in at libero for a match to see how that looks.

The serving is a problem. GG was pretty good yesterday but Orzol had an off day. I thought CC was effective. Franklins were the serves that impressed me most in the air, though Texas did a good job of fighting them off.

I bet she's got the natural talent to take over as L (passing that well against the 2x defending champ in her second match is nuts, TBH), maybe even taking over for GG, but hasn't put in the work to achieve that yet. Right now coach thinks GG is the top defender, but he clearly doesn't think should be receiving serves, so somebody HAS to step in as a second L. From what little we've seen thus far, Lola looks like she could overtake Saige before the end of the season.

I had pegged schumacher to make a difference this year. I’d like to see her in at libero for a match to see how that looks. Speaking of which here are 2 concerning quotes from Punzel's article on Saige's injury and return to action. "Right now nobody is close to G’s defense, nobody is close to her serving, nobody is close to her out of system setting,” Sheffield said. “And I don’t see any of them putting the work in to close that gap quite honestly. It’s hard for me to picture anybody taking that part of the game away from her. They’re getting outworked." And “All of our elite players at that position, they learned what it took to be elite. What our elite players did have in common was that they were searching for ways to be great. You had to keep them out of the gym. You think about Tiffany Clark and Lauren Barnes, both of those guys played at the end of their career hurt. And you still had to kick them out of the gym. They were in on their own a lot and working on fine tuning parts of the position. It’s no secret why people become great. They put the work in. We’ll see who wants to grab those spots.” I think these comments included make about 5 times already this season I've heard Sheffield say or hint that his players aren't putting in the work to get better. That's incredibly concerning.

Watching the replay of the Texas match and I am worried about how good we'll actually be as it pertains to Smrek and the liability she brings at the net defensively. Slow to elevate and slow laterally.

I don’t necessarily think Schumacher should be sole libero against Stanford, but I’d like to see how it looks at some point.

Slow to elevate and slow laterally. Anna Smrek was literally our best blocker last year by FIVB’s stats (which count blocks that you actually blocked instead of giving everyone in the vicinity a block assist). She just held Anna Debeer to a negative hitting %. She just slowed Madisen Skinner (tho obv those sets to Skinner were %*$#) and she also slowed Skinner down last December (check Skinner’s stats v Wisconsin last December v all other matches). Now suddenly she’s a liability blocking lol? I can understand being frustrated at Anna for her hitting right now, but making up random false stuff to criticize her when she’s the best on the team??

The blocking problems were more on the left pin, where Smrek wasn’t blocking. Once Carlson came in to set, Rutherford started going off. She hit several cross court shots yet the Badger Block wasn’t cutting off the angle at all.

Ok… I have noticed “Sheffy” frequently and historically likes to keep the best players on the bench. But you know that, or are at least inferring that… 🏐

Lola for lib please, led team in digs in 3ro (16) & also looked very solid passing My daughter played with Lola at NTDP and against her in club. Lola is the real deal. She's quick, aggressive, loud, a leader on the court, and has mad passing and defensive skills. I can see her as the team's primary libero.
