Got the passing numbers done for this match. Was curious because we swept without our best offensive game. Frank: 2.5, 75% gp on 8 attempts (Purdue was actively avoiding her, for good reason) Lola: 2.33, 76% on 21 attempts Orzol: 2.31, 81% on 16 attempts (Orzol had the only zero for the match with an overpass on the very first serve which is why she had the worst passer rating but best gp%) Middles (Booth/CC): 2.4, 80% on 5 attempts (I added this in because Purdue actively tried to serve at our middles 6 times leading to 1 serving error and overall good passing). This was just a standout passing game. It amazes me how much Frank has grown as a passer that teams would rather serve at our libero and former libero. Also, I was impressed with how Orzol and Lola both took on some tough serves with their hands and they resulted in good passes each time. Also want to point out that GG had some really insane digs this match. Charlie also had a crazy save where she reached outside of the antenna to pull a ball back in play. Charlie's defense is very good. I thought the passing was good, but I'm surprised it was that good. That's impressive.

But Lola hadn’t shown herself to be any different. Once given the L jersey she didn’t measure up either. She has done way better after the gopher match. The badgers have only had a fixed libero since then. I’ve been the biggest Lola stan on here since spring, and even I can see this. I hear you... but during non-con, I felt like Lola was getting aced by tough services and GG was just getting aced. I have no data to back that up. Just an eye test and some lingering frustration regarding a libero who can't pass. The biggest thing I noticed from eye test (and I did chart some of the matches too), is that when Lola got aced, it didn't affect her next pass. GG would clearly get rattled by aces causing her subsequent passes to also be worse. I honestly, I think that is GG's flaw at libero. She isn't able to act like a goldfish in serve receive. Defensively, she is going more off reaction, doesn't have time to think. But in serve receive, one bad shank and it throws her off her game.

Getting to a #5 or #6 seed means probably overcoming TX or/and Stanford, teams we lost to. Might be tough. I'm mostly thinking of scenarios with WI having 1-2 more losses. Maybe 1 (like at NE). WI resume might very well be better than TX at that point, even with the head to head loss. Stanford resume would seem quite good though. Then there's Creighton of course. In-state friend Marquette could sure do WI a favor in Milwaukee (but that's of course less likely than in other years).

“The Badgers recorded 15 blocks, the seventh consecutive match in which they’ve had at least 10 blocks. Junior Carter Booth led the way with nine stuffs while Smrek had five and Devyn Robinson and Fuerbringer four apiece That block was a major factor in the Boilermakers being held to a season low .089 attack percentage. Purdue had been held below .200 just once all season. Junior Eva Hudson led the Purdue attack with 17 kills, hitting .160, while its other dynamic outside hitter, Chloe Chicoine, was limited to a season-low three kills as she hit minus-.095 with five hitting errors. Sheffield adjusted his rotations in an effort to have the 6-foot-9 Smrek lined up opposite Chicoine, generously listed at 5-10, while the 6-1 Hudson would line up across from Fuerbringer most of the time. “We started in a rotation I’m not sure we’ve started in this year,” Sheffield said. “We thought we were going to give up Hudson. We had her matched up with Charlie, and we thought that was probably advantage Hudson. She’s going to have an advantage over a lot of people. We thought we could win if we didn’t have both of the outsides going off, so we had Smrek on Chicoine for most of the time. That really bottled her up quite a bit”

Think Charlie could win Big 10 setter of the week? Charlie will have trouble ever winning the Big Ten setter of the week this year. One of the big stats they look at is Assists/set, and with Wisconsins block and service aces reducing her chances for assists this will be lower than the quality of her performance all the time. She might have a shot if they look at her aces/set. She had 5 aces in 6 sets this week.... 0.83 aces/set. I just did her Assists/set. 70 assists in 6 sets = 11.67. That is pretty fine. Plus, the Purdue match was a high profile win, so I think she has a shot. Well, just the fact that the B1G has soooo many standout setters this year. Last year our two-headed monster may have well been the third best setter in conference, in aggregate. This year we added Tuaniga, healthy Shaffmaster, and Starck for standout setters, and the "middle of the pack" for setters is just so much better as well, plus lots of players who were suspect last year have become much better this year with that extra year of experience.

I think we just passed Texas since they lost to TAMU Weds, a team we've beaten already. They've also lost to Miami. That's two losses to unranked teams. The lowest ranked team the badgers have lost to is 15 Minnesota. The top B1G team is a top 4 seed. If the badgers win out, they get a seed. But that's a tough ask. If they get another loss, I think it would have to be one of the matches to Nebraska because i think only one team from the B1G will in the top 4 this year, and if PSU wins they get inside track on the badgers - presuming the Lions don't lose other matches. The badgers have to then hope PSU beats the huskers. Badgers can't afford two more losses unless somebody up top stumbles unexpectedly. I don't see who Creighton looses to in the big east. I think they get in unless the committee punishes them for basically being in the Big East. If Creighton gets in I only think 2 ACC teams will get into the top four and it's looking to me like Stanford will miss out. Somebody would have to lose to a team outside that group to open a window. SMU could be a spoiler (scratch that, those matches are done). Maybe UNC? Don't think it will be GT.

Not sure if someone had pointed this out yet but regarding the team photo in rainbows OP in this thread I noticed that Tosia looks to have sprouted up to what appears to be 6'6" now. The roster lists her still at 6'4" but standing next to Franklin she looks to be a couple inches taller. So even though Anna leaves after this season we still gonna have a couple GIANTS in the middle. 🙂

Setter of the week award should just be a coin toss. Setter is always hard to evaluate. A/set is just not a good stat to me - says much more about how teams score and pass. HP is as much about the hitters as a the setter. The field is just too crowded now with 18 teams.

If they look at team hitting percentage, her odds improve. Admittedly that's not all on the setter - needs good passing, digging, and hitting backing up the setter, but IMHO its a really good stat to evaluate a setter on. If she isn't putting her hitters in good positions, team hitting will suck.

Yeh, I haven't went to any of the games in person this year. Do they practice slides during the warmups by chance? Just wondering how her lateral movement would compare to our other middles? I've seen some of her footage from the team she played on in Europe before coming here and in fact I think I had likely shared the video link at some point in the past in this thread or maybe last years thread.

Hey Wisconsin fans! I'm planning to put together a match thread for this week's Illinois/Wisconsin match and would like to add Wisconsin's likely lineup on the first post of the thread. I'd very much appreciate your help in telling me which Badgers you're expecting will play regular rotations, all the way down to serving specialist. Here's an old example of the lineups that I add to the post, just to show you all the positions I like to add to the lineup. Thanks!

Badgers are now the 4th best blocking team in the country, just behind Idaho St, SD St and Louisville. In the big they are averaging 3.7 B/S which is astounding. I was impressed by the number of positive touches they got against Purdue too. That has improved recently as well.
They may be even better than last year. Did not have that on my bingo card. Normally we don't see that kind of blocking until the tournament.
