Future historians, please take note: Badger fans never stopped relitigating the libero wars of 2024. Or 2023, or 2022 ... If anyone has watched much film of Gülce from the Turkish team she played on pre-Badgers she kind of lacked range and I recall on several occasions her being slow to react defensively. Just as now she also was making some very pretty OOS 2nd ball sets. But after watching her from the Turkey footage to following her ups and downs of the last two seasons, I still don't agree with Sheffield playing Gulce against Minny as LIB because the book had already been written on her strengths and the weaknesses by that point of which she had failed to overcome PLUS we had just come off a stretch of wins with Lola as LIB with no doubt room for continuing improvement. That was a close L and could be the difference between a Big Title or 2nd place finish at the end of the day. We are 14-0 with Lola starting the match as libero and could have been 15-0.

Got the passing numbers done for this match. Was curious because we swept without our best offensive game.
Frank: 2.5, 75% gp on 8 attempts (Purdue was actively avoiding her, for good reason) Lola: 2.33, 76% on 21 attempts Orzol: 2.31, 81% on 16 attempts (Orzol had the only zero for the match with an overpass on the very first serve which is why she had the worst passer rating but best gp%)
Middles (Booth/CC): 2.4, 80% on 5 attempts (I added this in because Purdue actively tried to serve at our middles 6 times leading to 1 serving error and overall good passing).
This was just a standout passing game. It amazes me how much Frank has grown as a passer that teams would rather serve at our libero and former libero. Also, I was impressed with how Orzol and Lola both took on some tough serves with their hands and they resulted in good passes each time.
Also want to point out that GG had some really insane digs this match. Charlie also had a crazy save where she reached outside of the antenna to pull a ball back in play. Charlie's defense is very good.

Lola is the first freshman libero since ... ME Dodge (which also did not last)?
Really the first continuous freshman libero in Sheffield history at UW.

Not current-Badger news, but Liz Gregorski tore her ACL for a third time, ending her collegiate volleyball career. 😭

Nope. GG has flashes and under stress, falls apart. Not what one needs from a libero, particularly one that's being targeted she's so bad. But Lola hadn’t shown herself to be any different. Once given the L jersey she didn’t measure up either. She has done way better after the gopher match. The badgers have only had a fixed libero since then. I’ve been the biggest Lola stan on here since spring, and even I can see this. I hear you... but during non-con, I felt like Lola was getting aced by tough services and GG was just getting aced. I have no data to back that up. Just an eye test and some lingering frustration regarding a libero who can't pass.

Charlie's defense is very good. The defense on both sides was very good, resulting in some long rallies. Some of the lower hitting percentage on both sides was due to all the spectacular digs. Interestingly, the digs leaders on both sides were one of their outside hitters. Orzol and Chicoine led their teams with 14 digs for each of them!!!

Think Charlie could win Big 10 setter of the week? Charlie will have trouble ever winning the Big Ten setter of the week this year. One of the big stats they look at is Assists/set, and with Wisconsins block and service aces reducing her chances for assists this will be lower than the quality of her performance all the time. She might have a shot if they look at her aces/set. She had 5 aces in 6 sets this week.... 0.83 aces/set. I just did her Assists/set. 70 assists in 6 sets = 11.67. That is pretty fine. Plus, the Purdue match was a high profile win, so I think she has a shot.

I seem to remember that. I thought she started out really strong as L but was never the same after that injury.

Think Charlie could win Big 10 setter of the week? She could - it’ll be between her and Reilly this week. They both had about the same number of assists per set (11.7) and their teams had similar hitting percentages on the week. Her aces and blocking stats could separate her a bit, but we’ll see.

Smrek was out with an injury in the match Nebraska won last year. I don’t think Nebraska has ever won a match where Rettke or Smrek was playing. No, she wasn't lol. Smrek played the entire match. And Nebraska beat Rettke in 2017, too. Sorry I was lazy. I think then there have been 12 Wisconsin-Nebraska matches with either (or both) of Rettke or Smrek playing, and Wisconsin has won 10 of them.
