One of the most mind-boggling issues (amongst others lmao) is why on the world did they change the way bergen sets merritt? So many high balls now, barely any with tempo. Merritt is always being set way out to the pin whereas last year they at least moved her inside and around a bit more. She’s honestly always up against a double block now. The offense, while statistically better than last year, has become even far more simple than before. While this is just our second loss/first conference loss and we’ve done a lot of good things and won big matches this year, it was clear to see that our offense would let us down in a tight match. Very good transition opportunities every single point in the red zone of the 4th set and capitalized on none. We need to apply for media press passes to ask cook and company these needed questions. We should be at peak performance right now. Everything they've changed up has us in a slump

Landfair had some really tough sets she had to work on. She also had quite a few bombs where PSU just straight up dug them. Beason wasn’t even hitting the same bombs like Landfair did, she was just straight up hitting them wide or she got stuffed. And who did Cook kept playing? omg yes. Landfair gets the highest of moonballs that drift 10 feet off the net, meanwhile lindsay was getting set TEMPO like what This has also drived me mad. The way you just know the ball is gonna be around the 3m line going away from Landfair

Where to begin...
Passing. Mostly a factor in the first set. This team is well-trained in serve receive but sometimes the mental aspect of it has more of an effect on us than it should. Harper in particular just has some bizarre moments. Lock tf in and if you make a mistake, shake it off. And we need to find ways to be aggressive in those situations regardless. First practice footage of the season was literally OOS setting to set up hitters to do something with the ball.
Setting. Just awful. Truly I do not understand what has happened to Bergen this year but this staff should be sued bc she's flat out costing this team. The tempo is so freaking 2004 and Cook just loves it that way. I know they have a box where they want the outsides getting the ball so that they have space to make a decision. Well, guess what? Blockers and defenders can stop you when you're setting slow, high, drifted balls off the net that are practically begging the defense to win the point. Oh and how about setting our most athletic player? Hmm maybe that could be a good idea. Nah? Oh ok just a thought. There shouldn't be multiple misconnections with your middle at this point in the season either, even if that middle is Allick. Also WTF are these sets to Merritt. More on her later, but the setting to her is night and day from last year and I don't udnerstand why we're asking her to take these weird ass swings from like the top outside of the pin. And it's not that Bergen *can't* run a tempo ball bc when she's forced to by the pass she does it just fine and oh look Harper gets a clean un-contested kill.
Hitters... Setting notwithstanding, Merritt's performance as the leader of this team unfortunately set the tone and the tone was terrible. The inability to score is just laughable at this point. Same song over and over again. I swear I can watch like a bottom Big 12 team bomb kills in situations that Nebraska could dream of. It just never gets addressed. Taylor gets some really pitiful opportunities but she needs to find the floor too. That said, Krause is definitely not the answer and I don't want to hear anyone whining about her not playing. If anything she should've been put in for Merritt. Throw the defense off a bit. We know Krause can bomb an in-system ball on the right. Get some use out of the two years she spent over there.
Defense. Honestly, we don't adjust and we aren't reading/reacting quick enough. Caroline had some kills tonight that she had no business scoring on, others she definitely just took impressive swings. It's great that we stopped Mruzik for the most part but there were definitely points left out there.
Just a tough match and I'm extremely disappointed that this is the effort they gave when it was the most high-stakes match of the season. I can only hope they do better in the tournament but the path will likely go through Smrek and Franklin now which isn't who you want to have beat 3 times in one season. Nobody to blame but themselves

If someone would have told me yesterday that they would hold Mruzik to .000 and Hannah to .137, I would be pretty happy. Who expected Carol to go off like that? And Maggie? Still, our pins were beyond atrocious. Bergie was really inconsistent. Hopefully this is extra motivation for the next few weeks.

I’m still trying to process everything from tonight. I have more questions and concerns than answers.
Did anyone have a good match tonight? Andi and Harper had some big kills but they are also two of my favorites so it’s easier for me to focus on the good than the bad with them.
And you could feel the tension at times between Maggie and Caroline and their former team. And I’m glad those girls had a great game for PSU.

I haven’t checked the numbers, but it’s seemed to me that the games Bergen has struggled most have been the games we haven’t passed perfectly.
That sounds like I’m stating the obvious: imperfect pass = imperfect set? But to me, it’s seemed like a different level of inaccuracy than with other teams with high quality setters. Case in point - Starck was sent off the net in many situations tonight and still managed perfect sets to put her hitters in good positions. Even Shaffmaster seems to put up more decent sets off worse passes. I’m wondering if our stellar passing has bailed her out almost too much, because the second our passing gets shaky, her location tanks. Sets drift, they’re too low, you name it. More than I see normally, and more than I saw last year. And her deception can usually get us kills even on imperfect sets because it fools the block, but she made some poor choices tonight. That was hard to watch.

We need to run a much better offense. It doesn’t have to be extremely fast but whatever old fashioned system we have going on is not gonna cut it. Bergen is clearly a VERY talented setter and she can run that type of offense. This is why I want Cook to retire soon cuz I’m sick of this slow offense lol.

This is arguably the quickest, most balanced attack Nebraska has ever run in the Cook era. The fact that it's offensively efficient (normally) and doesn't even have players in many individual awards (because they are so balanced) is proof.
