Carter Booth? mmmm yes. I don't think Wisconsin's passing and setting will give her the offensive opportunities to shine and she hasn't shown any ability to be an offensive force but for an in system set with one blocker in front of her, she doesn't serve, and if Wisconsin does go to a 5-1, where she actually does lead the conference (blocking) will take a big hit if she's next to Charlie F. rather than always being next to Smrek or Robinson. I'm not saying Carter Booth can't or won't be all conference, but I think the fundamentals aren't working in her favor as an individual contributor.

I will start publishing the daily team previews on Monday. That coincides with media days, the start of camp, and gives us enough time to cover 18 out of 10 teams before the season. Random order again. I will make a list and shuffle it based on the number of Tijana Boskovic kills against USA I have my batting order. The list of teams was assembled and shuffled 27 times, per Boskovic's kill count. We don't know what the order would have been without Gio's big brain double sub in the fifth set, but I don't make those decisions. The team leading us off tomorrow: came here and was reminded my life sucks thanks 😭

2023 Results:Oregon came within a few points of reaching the 2022 national semifinals, setting a high bar for the following year. The 2023 campaign started with a trip to Hawai'i, where Oregon dominated all three of its contests in the Stan Sheriff Center. Another road trip followed in Week 2 as the Ducks took care of San Diego State, UC Santa Barbara, and Pepperdine to improve to 6-0. Oregon only lost one set during this stretch. Adversity finally arrived as Oregon suffered its first loss in a five-set defeat to Minnesota in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge. Oregon bounced back by beating Ohio State to split the weekend's matches, which Stanford hosted. The road swing went way out east for a road contest against Pittsburgh and a neutral-court matchup with James Madison. Oregon and Pitt produced a wild, back-and-forth thriller that went to a deciding fifth. The Ducks claimed a 15-13 win in Set 5 despite squandering a 2-0 lead in a hostile environment. That all could have been tainted the following day in a classic "trap match" against JMU. The Ducks had to claw back from a 2-1 deficit to avoid a major upset, bringing their overall record to 9-1. A one-off win against Marquette wrapped up Oregon's remarkable non-conference slate in which it never played in Matthew Knight Arena. Oregon finally had its home debut in the season's conference opener against Oregon State. The Ducks won another Civil War and capped off the weekend with a solid sweep at UCLA. As the Pac-12 season rolled along, Oregon found itself with a familiar title: the undisputed second-best team in the Pac-12. The best, of course, was Stanford, which won the 2022 conference crown with a 19-1 record. Oregon dropped both 2023 meetings to the Cardinal, including a five-set comeback bid that came up just short in Maples Pavilion. Washington State was the primary challenger for Oregon's second-place stranglehold in the conference standings. The Cougs scored a huge road win at MKA on Oct. 1, handing the Ducks their first conference loss of 2023. Further home losses against Arizona State and the aforementioned Cardinal left Oregon with a 7-3 conference record midway through Pac-12 play. The back half of the slate was much cleaner for Oregon with the five-set loss in Maples as the sole blemish. The top two in the final Pac-12 ledger looked nearly identical to 2022. Oregon would need to solve its home woes before hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Ducks were slated as a No. 2 seed in the Madison quadrant and met Southeastern Louisiana in the opener. The Southland champs were quickly dispatched. Then, Oregon took care of Hawai'i in a reprise of opening weekend. On to the "Big Ten regional." Future conference foe Purdue was on the docket in the regional semifinals. The No. 2 seed quickly established its dominance in the neutral-court contest and overwhelmed the Boilermaker defense. This leaves us with the regional final, giving Oregon back-to-back appearances in the final eight for the first time in program history. Unfortunately, this is where the journey ends. Regional host Wisconsin ousted Oregon, leaving the Ducks with a 29-6 overall record. 2023 Lineup:Oregon trotted out a veteran-laden lineup in 2023. Not all of these players were returners from prior Duck teams, but it was a seasoned group nonetheless. Incumbent setter Hannah Pukis tied everything together. She joined the Ducks in 2022 after three successful starting seasons at conference rival Washington State. When Pukis arrived in Eugene, she gave Oregon its first steady, reliable 5-1 setter since August Raskie. Pukis's style also mirrored that of Raskie with her foot speed, aggression, and creativity. All-American honors were warranted. The 2023 ball control unit was experienced with Georgia Murphy returning at libero. She was accompanied by Daley McClellan, a junior outside-DS hybrid who would sub in for the frontcourt opposite. The newcomer here was true freshman Kate Thibault, who earned escalating reps near the start of conference play. She would either come in as a serving sub or replace McClellan in the passing pattern. The DS spot alongside Murphy was a source of some passing friction, but Pukis's setting skill often limited the damage. Other returning Ducks were featured along the net. Redshirt senior Karson Bacon was the primary M1. She had been swapped in and out for fellow veteran middle Colby Neal during much of the 2022 season. Bacon took a larger share of the starting spotlight in 2023 and saw a huge uptick in the blocking category. Her tally ranked 25th in the NCAA in blocks per set. Senior opposite Morgan Lewis had an even greater rise in 2023. She played sparingly during the 2022 campaign after recording over 200 kills in '21. Lewis then had a sudden burst during the 2022 regional round in which she recorded 13 kills against Nebraska and Louisville--her second and third double-digit efforts of the year. That turned out to be an omen for 2023 as Lewis obliterated all her career bests as Oregon's full-time opposite. She amassed nearly three kills per set on a 0.341 clip. The other familiar commodity to discuss is outside hitter Mimi Colyer, the 2022 AVCA National Freshman of the Year. The California native thrived in her debut season while competing alongside Brooke Nuneviller on the left side. Colyer's production and efficiency dipped somewhat in 2023, but she still took the reins as Oregon's top scorer. Ohio State transfer Gabby Gonzales occupied Oregon's L1 spot last year. Gonzales was frequently characterized as a player who was never flashy but always consistent in various areas. She grew accustomed to being the first server of a set in Rotation 2. Oregon also got plenty of passing volume from Gonzales, helping to alleviate any post-Nuneviller growing pains. Another fifth-year transfer was inserted into the M2 spot. Kara McGhee joined the fray from Baylor and enjoyed the best single-season efficiency output of her career. Her 0.415 mark ranked 11th on the NCAA's individual leaderboards, and McGhee was not far behind Bacon in the blocking category. --- 2024 Projected Lineup:Time to fill in the gaps. Pukis leaves a huge void at the setter position. That spot is down to two players: redshirt freshman Cristin Cline and JUCO transfer Roberta Purashaj. Cline has the advantage of being in the Oregon gym for a full season and understanding the unique role of an Oregon setter. However, the North Carolina prep athlete will face stiff resistance from last year's NJCAA Player of the Year. The path from JUCO to a top-tier D1 program is rare on the volleyball scene, but Purashaj steps into a situation favorable for early playing time. We'll likely see the Florida SouthWestern standout sometime in 2024. You could float the idea of a 6-2, but that might be a sore subject on an Oregon preview. Besides, it might be tough to scrounge enough opposite depth to justify it anyway. Lewis departs, leaving a new face on the right side. Noemie Glover is nearly analogous to Cline: came in last year and spent most of the year on the bench. However, sporadic appearances in 2023 eliminated the possibility of Glover redshirting. She will likely see the first looks at opposite. Bridget Gould brings some in-state flair to the position, but there's not a lot of depth without moving pieces around. Let's bring another redshirt lurker into the conversation. Onye Ofoegbu rested in 2023 after joining the Ducks from UC Irvine, where she hauled in back-to-back all-Big West honors in her final two years with the Anteaters. This athletic middle blocker earned a reputation as a high-volume scorer, putting her atop the NCAA charts at her position. How will it translate to the Big Ten? The biggest source of continuity is Colyer. She has quickly pivoted from being the star underclassman to the steely veteran. We'll see if Oregon toys with the idea of moving her to L1 or--gasp--opposite. Regardless, Colyer will lead the teams in swings again this year and has a lot of pressure to handle. She will be the focal point of opposing scouting reports, and that includes a heavier passing burden. Passing. It's a question mark. Murphy departs, and Oregon also loses the first contacts shouldered by Gonzales. The leading libero candidate is Kansas State grad transfer Mackenzie Morris, who churned out nearly 500 digs in her final season with the Wildcats. McClellan will likely retain some role in the backcourt, if not the same one she had for most of 2023. Depth is frayed somewhat with Thibault returning home to Minnesota. Another perfect segue. Minnesota. The Ducks seemed poised to deploy redshirt freshman Alex Acevedo at one of its outside hitter spots alongside Colyer. However, Acevedo made the surprise move to the Golden Gophers after spring ball. We're now looking at another former Big West star to take the lead. Michelle Ohwobete transfers in from UC Santa Barbara after earning conference player of the year honors with the Gauchos. The Ducks would love to see Ohwobete have a first-contact presence in addition to her prowess in the frontcourt. The second middle spot is wide open behind Ofoegbu. Neal fits the mold of an M2, but is she ready to bring more offensive output? The cornerstone of Oregon's 2024 freshman signing class is a pair of middles. Anaya Thrower and Mia Tvrdy are in the mix for playing time, but it's a big task. 2024 Schedule:Oregon's debut Big Ten season starts at home. It's just nice to know they can still do that. Pittsburgh reciprocates on last year's invite with a trip to Eugene. It's a marquee matchup in Week 1. Long Beach State will also be there. Colorado State, Grand Canyon, and Central Arkansas make up the Week 2 slate in Fort Collins. It's a decent chance to boost some RPI stock unless we see Moby Magic. BYU, San Diego, Portland State, and Oregon State are all that's left. The Beavers are happy to be here. B1G: 2024 Outlook:Teams like the 2024 Ducks are hard to project. You've got a team with a high ceiling and a floor that you could reasonably put in a lot of different places. The talent is there, but how does it all come together? New ball control contributors will play a huge role in how far Oregon goes this year. Passing and setting will be guided by several players seeing their first action in an Oregon uniform. Any serve-receive struggles could be magnified by no longer having Pukis as a backstop to better the ball. Still, a wealth of offensive weaponry should keep Oregon among the Big Ten's upper tiers. Colyer's responsibilities expand further in 2024. Her "carry factor" may not be the highest in the conference (see: Illinois, Ohio State), but she will touch the ball a lot. Colyer needs to be the pressure release for her setter, whether it's a redshirt freshman or a JUCO transfer--or a medley of both. Big Ten coaches slotted the Ducks 6th in their preseason poll. That's fine, although the gaps between teams behind the top two are incredibly small. This is where that "ceiling versus floor" dilemma could swing things in either direction for the Ducks. Putting conference placement aside, an NCAA Tournament bid should still be the expectation.
