Enjoyed the scrimmage today. Thoughts? Interesting that both freshmen setters were in the setting position. I'm thinking that was just to assess them in a competition spot, as I would expect to see Burns starting. I can see where they might explore a 6-2 with Burns in OPP half of the time, but I don't think it makes sense to take Hester off the court, because she is a strong weapon at the front and should be on as much as possible imo. Paz is really good in the backrow and had some good kills in the front, but her future is in back row only in my opinion. Narlioglu struggled in serve receive in my opinion, and not sure she should be starting quite yet. I was intrigued by Thornton sharing time at middle/pin (as did Rumel), and honestly feel she is better at the pin compared to middle, as she is smart where she puts the ball. If it was up to me based on what I saw, I would start this:
OH: Light, Thornton (back up Rodriquez who was also good in the backrow) OPP: Hester S: Burns MB: Rumel, Schoening L: White, DS Paz, serving sub Lilo
What they may likely do though: OH: Light, Rumel OPP: Hester S: Burns. If 6-2, I see Lilo as the 2nd setter MB: Schoening, Schraeder L: White/Narlioglu, DS/Serving sub-Coba

But the floor still said PAC-12 lol. I suppose they don't plan to change that during this temporary stay in the WCC huh.

Jerseys had a WCC logo but the court has Pac12. I guess no reason to change the court since they technically are still Pac12.
This is coming from a more layman when it comes to VB experience. No one was quite as explosive as Vernon was with her hits last year (or even Sheridan), but Hester looked pretty good once she got comfortable, Rodriguez looked good but had more hits out of the court, I assume just freshman nerves and lack of experience in college VB. Being a somewhat "newer" fan (2 years) it was great to see Light play. She's such a nice person and I'm happy she's finally all healed up.
Shields was the only Beav that didn't play and she didn't have kneepads on so I assume that was already decided before the game started.

I'm a total OSU fan, but does the 4th place ranking say more out the team or the conference?

I'm a total OSU fan, but does the 4th place ranking say more out the team or the conference? Unfortunately, the conference, which historically had 3 or 4 NCAA Tournament teams (every year in its heyday), is becoming a shadow of itself... Historically, BYU, San Diego, Santa Clara, Pepperdine were often very competitive nationally. BYU has left, San Diego is not the perennial powerhouse of 2-10 years ago, Santa Clara is nowhere near its former glory... Pepperdine, after some rough years, is the only team on the upswing. LMU has also had some good seasons in the past 5 years. Those are the only recent tournament teams. The others in the conference have been on a rocky road. (Pacific was once a national champion, but their funding has dropped off a cliff. Portland and Gonzaga have struggled.) It's going to be very interesting to see how WSU and OSU fit into the hierarchy of the WCC. I'm looking forward to seeing how the season pans out.

Just an exhibition, but the Beavers beat the Ducks today. Anyone catch it and have insights?

There haven't been any updates since the Beavs started, but they are 1-3... Interesting note 3-year starting Libero Ryan White appears to not be on the team and is no longer on the roster. She played the Orange and Black game but since then it looks like Yasemin Narlioglu has stepped in to start.

Others are doing pretty good. Freshman Rodriguez is in a boot so no other OH to step in for Light right now it seems. What happened to White I wonder? They could really be using her. I wonder if she quit if she was told she wouldnt be the starting libero or lost her scholarship. I knew she and Yasemin were sharing that spot in the spring games and scrimmages. Too bad.

I have not been reading the match threads.... I probably should since I haven't been able to watch a game yet. Ryan and her parents were at the Orange and Black, we said hi to her parents as we were walking in. She was all academic so I doubt she would lose a scholarship on grades. The third suggestion is all I could think but it would seem out of character from our interactions and how she seems on the court. I know my kiddo will be bummed since we plan to go to the next Saturday game coming up.

Again Light has been targeted a lot in serve receive and she hit negative today. She could be ds'd, with Coba or Paz, but that doesn't seem to be happening. OSU is now on a 4 match lose streak. Big bummer about White though.

Went to the game tonight, Portland St. Was definitely outmatched. I wasn't sure what to expect considering the last several games but I was pleasantly surprised.

We just struggle with good defensive teams, which alot of teams are, as our pins aren't very strong defensively and they play all around. I suspect we may go 50/50 in league play. We will see.

My kiddo saw White up in the stands there and talked to her for a bit, so that made her night.
