Great move on the girls part to go to prom!! The kids need to enjoy high school they’ve put the vball work in and earned the right to miss a tournament in which a lot of girls are missing due early enrollment anyway. 1st Alliance added 17’s players to fill those spots which created no drop off.

More like an All Stars National Championship than 18’s National Championship. Now THAT would be a high quality level of volleyball event!

Maybe for some, but to finish your Jr. volleyball career with a medal at the Junior Olympics (GJNC), and your final tournament DOES NOT SUCK =)

TAV 18 Black (NT) rolls this tourney and takes down 1st Alliance 18 Gold (GL) 27-25 25-22 to win USAV 18O Championship That’s a terrific team and has been since 13’s. Nice to see them get a natty.

One player who impressed for First Alliance was Carolyn Tarnow, 6'3 middle from the class of 2026. After Abby Vander Wal she was the second best offensive player for 1st Alliance. TAV had a hard time stopping her. It would not surprise me to see her make the All Tournament team.

Just watched the 18s match from earlier. Spears was great offensively. Thought she was hitting deep at times, in a good way. Like not just trying to bury it in the middle of the court. That being said, she didn't look anywhere remotely close to being 6 rotations ready for college. They were trying their best to hide and pinch her and even with that I think she only passed one ball to target all match.

USAV ought to have their butts kicked for putting 18s in a position to have to choose prom vs Nationals but agree with the many who choose to go to prom. Shame on the coaches who tried to force kids to give up their prom or even more bizarre who tried to get players to attend other players proms from the weekend before.
Congrats to TAV for finally winning one with the amount of talent that has been on that team for years.

Over half of that TAV team missed their prom this past weekend.

Does the frozen roster rule not apply to 18s? (1st alliance 16s/17s have both qualified Open, and would be considered frozen to those rosters?))

Does not apply to 18s unless you are moving from one 18s to another is my understanding of the rule. As for players go to prom instead. It is of course their choice and I do not try and sway their decision. We had 3 girls missing from our team and the remaining girls played really well, so we ended the season on a great note. However, missing prom is not as big of a deal as people act like it is. Most of the girls I have ever coached by 18s year are so close with their teammates and value that time and competitiveness so much that they regret missing the last time with their team at nationals when they choose prom instead. Typically, the ones who do not, have been burned out for awhile and need a break, which is of course the correct choice for them.

The rule essentially boils down to this: a player cannot help two different teams qualify for GJNC, but they may participate in both 18s and non-18s GJNC. So, anybody who is age eligible can participate in both 18s GJNC and another age division of GJNC. This rule prevents a club from taking their best player on one qualified team and putting them on another team's roster to help another team qualify; that would be illegal.

Flipside to that is that by going to things like prom an athlete can create a balance that helps to prevent burnout. (I'm not trying to directly argue with you, merely present a possible "other side of the coin".)

Congrats to TAV for finally winning one with the amount of talent that has been on that team for years. As far as I can tell, there seems to be no appetite for moving 18s nationals. When it was in the summer, players were already leaving for their college teams and if the athlete wasn't going to be playing in college, they wanted the season to be over. When you start trying to find another time to have the event, there really isn't a good time. There will always be a percentage of players who have prom on the weekend of nationals, but none of the alternatives are better.
