POLL #5: Oct. 3, 2005 (printable version) Rank School (First-Place Votes) Total Points * 2005 Record Last Week 1 Nebraska (58) 1,498 13-0 1 2 Washington (2) 1,434 12-0 2 3 Stanford 1,385 15-1 3 4 Penn State 1,318 13-2 4 5 Florida 1,183 14-1 5 6 Louisville 1,165 14-0 6 7 Missouri 1,157 12-0 7 8 Wisconsin 1,104 12-1 8 9 Minnesota 1,051 13-2 9 10 Notre Dame 959 11-1 10 11 Hawai'i 829 9-6 11 12 Arizona 761 11-2 13 13 California 754 11-2 14 14 Santa Clara 689 13-1 15 15 San Diego 632 11-2 12 16 Brigham Young 525 11-0 20 17 Southern California 498 5-6 19 18 Ohio State 484 9-4 18 19 Texas 437 9-2 22 20 Kansas State 403 12-3 16 21 UCLA 342 7-5 17 22 Purdue 300 12-3 21 23 Texas A&M 136 7-6 23 24 Ohio 116 14-2 NR 25 Maryland 85 14-0 NR Others receiving points and listed on two or more ballots: Saint Mary's (Calif.) 58, LSU 57, Long Beach State 44, Pepperdine 27, UC Santa Barbara 16, Loyola Marymount 13, Kansas 12, Tennessee 10, Western Kentucky 5. Four teams mentioned on only one ballot for a total of 13 combined points. Dropped Out: LSU (24), Long Beach State (25) Poll conducted and distributed by the AVCA ** The AVCA does not recognize any rankings below 25 in the poll as it is not possible when voters only select the top 25 teams and only teams with two or more votes are listed. It would be accurate and logical to say "listed" instead of "ranked" in the poll for spots below 25. Louisville is over-rated, but that's OK. What I don't get is why Florida, Louisville, Missouri and Wisconsin all _gained_ votes. Why? Wisconsin's the only team you can make a case for. Minnesota loses votes? Why? They are already under-rated.

Minnesota loses votes? Why? They are already under-rated. None of them moved in the ratings. Some voters who had placed the first four teams you mentioned lower last week raised them to where their peers had voted them; some who had previously rated Mn higher last week acceded to their peers this week. Herd mentality or reverence for the status quo, take your pick.

Hawaii has to be wayyy overrated this year. SOunds like politics to me. Tell me..how do they stay in the top 15 with a win-loss record like they have? Only 2 top teams played neb/penn and they still stay so high in rankings. Seems like $ talks...cuz NCAA and AVCA know Hawaii brings in $$$ in the post season. Just IMHO

My favorite is Arizona moving up to #12 after getting hammered by UW.
But they lost votes, at least.

Just IMHO Hawaii's kinda there by default. Who else below them has a case for being ranked higher??? Some teams "might" be better, but have had untimely losses. No big deal, it will all get sorted out in the end.

Just IMHO Which teams ranked below Hawaii should be ahead of them then? All of them have some flaws in their record so that I can understand the reasoning of the voters. By the way the argument about $ talks is absolutely ridiculous, if that were true why did Hawaii not get to host postseason matches last year.

well if you're going on strength of schedule i would say perhaps arizona and texas...if you're going on strictly win loss...how about maryland...14-0. you may as well put tex a&m at 12th then...they have 6 losses too and Big 12 isn't an easy conference! I dont know..just seems that hawaii is always up there no matter what. nothing against the girls, just like the football polls...it's all relevant..except it seems to always come out ahead for a team that the BCS knows will bring in the $ whether they deserve to be there or not...afterall...ask CAL fans about the Rose Bowl last year! Course, TX fans wl tell you otherwise tho.

Purdue should be ranked higher than Hawaii. Hawaii barely squeaks by New Mexico State and stays put?? Arizona gets spanked by Washington and moves up?? Purdue almost upsets Wisconsin and moves down?? That's totally absurd and shows the AVCA voters have their heads up their butts.

It seems to be true that the voters pay no attention to the scores, just whether it's a win or a loss. There's value to that. Unless, of course, you're trying to rank teams.

Only 2 top teams played neb/penn and they still stay so high in rankings. Typical junior high poster response. Fyi, Hawai'i also played Washington twice but I don't expect you to know that because it doesn't seem like you know much. They also played USC and UCLA, two teams who are down but still ranked in the top 25. Seems like $ talks...cuz NCAA and AVCA know Hawaii brings in $$$ in the post season. Just IMHO If I gave you a penny for you opinion, I'd expect change. Hard to bring in money when you get shipped to the continent to play tourney matches. Last year's selections prove the Committee doesn't not hold the AVCA poll in high regards. Go back to school rookie.

Please remember CAL was trounced by Texas Tech in the Holiday Bowl(sorry BClause) and Texas beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl, as the previous poster said these things tend to work themselves out...
