I think if you take public, visible political stances people should be allowed to respond. I don’t see any of “stand up”, “liberal” or “woke” as over the top personal attacks (they all reference political beliefs). If it turned into personal attacks outside of their public political displays, I think it’s a different discussion. Should the fans be able to boo a team that is in a prayer circle on the court? That's a public display, and potentially political. I think respect and civility in this type of environment is preferable. Allowed? I guess. It would make them %*$#ty people though.

Rainelle jones was told "stand up, you piece of trash". It would be interesting to know if Nebraska officials would have removed and banned the fan if he didn't add the piece of trash part (I looked it up and the fan was removed/banned). I'd be interested in seeing a citation to what you looked up. What you're saying doesn't jibe with what I know from sitting very close to the fan in question.

I also am not sure this is political in its entirety (in the typical left/right sense). Black conservatives could certainly feel the need to protest against racism, right? I'm going to speak on behalf of all Black conservatives. While we would most certainly protest against racism, the National anthem would not be the means by which we carry out that protest.

But Jones wasn’t shocked by the comments.

If someone told a UL-Lafayette player "Kneel for the anthem, you bootlicker!" or, "Uncle Tom!" I'd also support their removal, FWIW.
I also think I'd be stricter with NCAA events than Pro events, but, maybe only slightly.

Fans should not be able to harass players during a contest for kneeling during an anthem. Arguably fans should not be allowed to harass players at all, but it happens all the time. I've seem some of the very worst at local high school games, because the fans are super close and there isn't much stopping them. It gets really personal and pretty horrible at times.

You would think, but college (and even high school) tends to have students acting out (often drunk or high) and doing really tasteless things (along with some bat%*$# crazy long time fans). I think it is much easier for large groups of poorly behaved fans to get way too close to the action in amateur venues because it is so cheap, whereas pro they seem to have better security and the cost barrier to large groups of ill behaved fans right up close to the action.

Surely there are never any drunk fans at high school games, because they would all be below the legal drinking age.

I mean nobody at MY high school ever drank, but there were whispers of debauchery at some of our rivals. Besides, they don't have to be drunk, they are naturally plenty stupid and inappropriate at that age.

But Jones wasn’t shocked by the comments. What's your point? I was there when it happened, so don't need a refresher on the details of the situation. I was specifically interested in trojansc's source for the following part of their post: "(I looked it up and the fan was removed/banned)". Edited to add: I see the quote about the fan being kicked out/banned in the article you posted. However, it was hearsay attributed to unnamed Nebraska players and I can tell you for a fact that the "stand up you piece of trash" fan was not kicked out that night and was not banned from future matches.
