Les Murakami was borderline racist. A quick look back at his coaching staff, and the majority of the players who played on his teams during his tenure at UH confirms this.

They could just have ONE banner for WAC/Big West titles (per sport) and just update the years they win it. Also, another banner for NCAA Elite Eight and Final Four, and just update the years they make it that deep.
Talk about not doing justice to your athletes!

I know I should just ignore this, but I can't let this go. Les Murakami was a lot of things, he may not have been the easiest coach to play for, but he was no racist. If you look back at his coaching staff and players I saw a lot of ethnic diversity. It certainly doesn't confirm racism of any kind. Do you really think that he could last 30 years in the job and in the end have the baseball stadium named for him if he was "racist" as you say.

The thought had entered my mind often. It was conspicuous that his assistants were all Japanese. But I brushed it off. I lived through the plantation era in Hawaii when the "melting pot" was still essentially starting. Rascism was prevelant but not the same as on the mainland where it was basically white vs black. Here in hawaii all ethnic groups were minority (still are, by the way). The racial separation was more due to cultural differences rather than racial. If Murakami surrounded himself with Niseis, I think it was because he could relate more to them than to, for example, caucasions.

When I attended McKinley High School, the local Filipino and Korean gangs would beat me up all the time.

The young doesn't understand your sense of humor, only the senile.

When I attended McKinley High School, the local Filipino and Korean gangs would beat me up all the time. Yeah, but that had nothing to do with race.

Ahhh, now i can understand the name you picked for this board. You want to be able to summon wolves, in case of repeat performance, eh?

Talked a bit about Sarah Mason, Dave said she played really well on the road trip. There was a definite adjustment period coming from Oregon to Hawaii. He talked about Oregon not having a lot of pressure to win, she wasn’t expected to do as many things, but at Hawaii more is expected, lot of pressure to win etc. Interesting note, they tried to recruit her out of high school and she wanted to come to Hawaii, but they only had one scholarship available at the time and it went to Alicia Arnott instead. With this said, one begins to wonder- are the two friends? I would think that the pressure is on Arnott to live up to her getting the scholarship, while the opportunity is there for Mason to show that she should have gotten it. Under these circumstances, the two would be more rivals than friends. A lot of implications stem from this situation.

I can't speak of Arnott and Mason --- EVER --- but from my own experiences, in every team I've been associated with, half my teammates didn't get along with the other half. There was and will always be cliques. And I'm not just talking about my chess team, either!

In Arnott's and Mason's situation, there is something not usually there in everyday rivalry- the scholarship factor. I don't think there is a similar situation in other teams. Thus, one can almost feel that they have no love for each other. Take it further, either one may even be wishing the other make errors or flop on her face. If this is true- I hope not- then maybe we can see why the team is not jelling like last year.
