Yeah if you wanna say that Knight was better than Robinson last night that’s all good. UCLA got enough offense through in the end to win very smoothly. Lol, what do you have against Knight... I don't have anything against Knight

Lol, what do you have against Knight... Many times the opinion is focused on comparing players against each other. I prefer talking about the entire team and how it all fits together. There are multiple lineups that can be used against another teams strengths and game plan. UCLA has the benefit of have several pieces to move around. This is good and bad. More options means more possible changes. Change is both good and bad. Robinson is an elite blocker with a very strong attack, and very consistent serve. Knight has a very strong all around game with multiple serves, strong OOS attack, high IQ, consistent passing, and mental toughness. Rama with a strong set hits over the block. His arm angle is unique. Champ crushes the ball, passes, serves very well, and his very consistent at a very high level. The list goes on. All good pieces to have and if used properly is why UCLA is tough in the long run. Yep! I personally prefer the elite attacking output that Robinson and Rama bring to the consistent all around game of Champlin and Knight. I'm not saying certain players are better, I'm saying that if I were the coach I would want Rama and Robinson's style of play. Nothing against others, just personal preference. I recognize that Knight had substantially better basic statistical numbers last night. All is good. I'm not trying to start any beef over some of the top OHs in the country.

I think Speraw is balancing out these gifts. He is also likely looking at stats we don't value as much as attacking - like reception which gets the middle involved and allows Rowan to avoid the blockers.

During the 2nd set against Pepperdine, he pretty much served Akinwumi out of the match.

IIRC, Knight showed his ability to serve in and with accuracy against Hawaii in the 2023 national final.

I don't know if anyone wants to create a new thread for Game 2, but fun to see Speraw rotating to my fav Rama and McQuiggan + Sloane getting the start here. Gonna have to find a YouTube video of this after-the-fact!

UCLA wins set 1 30-28 despite starting off 0-5 behind strong sets from McQuiggan and Sloane, Pepperdine's Akinwumi had 9 kills.

UCLA wins set 3, and the match (30-28, 25-11, 25-19) thanks to excellent days from Rama and McQuiggan. I won't pull out the receipts right now but it's always fun to see your favorite players play well, even if it's against Pepperdine (no offense). UCLA gets a nice little break until next Friday/Saturday with two away matches against BYU.

Watched the game on youtube this morning and a few quick thoughts.
- McQuiggan has a really good swing style: he approaches kinda facing the setter so he can adjust more and slash the ball accross. Cool! - McQuiggan also showed really nice timing to get up and block the BIC, something McHenry/Genis aren't terribly good at imo - Rowan looked better yesterday than I'd seen often this year - David genuinely happy to be out there, we'll see if he gets benched against BYU but it was nice to see him smiling and cheery - Rama is the best offensive pin hitter on this team (Robinson's a bit behind in my opinion) - Sloane is a much better blocker than David - Champlin is a great leader - McQuiggan (and i mean this in the nicest possible way, I love his play a lot) has one of the least dangerous serves i've seen at the college level - Knight in street clothes, lower body injury? (potentially different than upperbody from earlier this year?) Probably not serious?

I’m not sure why Speraw took Sloane out, but I think as of right now, the spot should be Sloane’s to lose.

Sloane took a spike off his face late in the second set, and was immediately replaced by David. I did not see him back on the bench until late in the third set.

Hopefully Sloane doesn't have to go into concussion protocol. I'd prefer Sloane to start at oppo in Provo, but if he's not the starter I would want to be able to sub him in.

I must’ve missed that somehow
