On the 1 week anniversary of “June 15th” here are my thoughts on this recruiting legislation for Division 1 VB 1. When this June 15th legislation was implemented it was to slow down the 8th & 9th grade commitments. This has been effective & needs 2 continue to be a priority. 🧵 2. Being able to make offers but athletes not being able to make Official or Unofficial visits until nearly 2 months later is counterintuitive. This needs to change. 3. Let’s consider allowing recruits to call coaches starting in January or February of sophomore year to start the relationship building process and learn more about the institutions they are considering attending. 4. We need to consider allowing coaches to give more info on their level of interest in an athlete earlier in the process. Currently, we can’t say anything regarding how they rank on our list until offer date—which means kids have no idea if they are #1 (likely getting an offer) or, let’s say, #5 (likely not getting an offer). The heartbreak we sometimes cause could be lessened if we are allowed to be more transparent earlier. We don’t necessarily need to throw all of our current legislation away, but we need to make it better. Coaches, athletes and parents, pass along your ideas in the comments.

Sorry, longtime lurker, noob at actually posting.
I suspect many on here have been through this on one side or another but having literally just gone through this with my daughter, this couldn’t ring more true. Having the first official contact coincide with offers and potential acceptance of those offers is nonsensical. Coaches are always going to have more info than the PSA - they’ve been watching film and scouting live games for months. The kids maybe see them on their courts, get questionnaires in the mail and maybe get a little color from a club director or recruiting coordinator but really don’t know with any certainty just how interested a school may be. The best way to get a feel for these programs and campuses before official contact is to attend a camp but they don’t really begin in earnest until a week or so before the contact date - when choosing a camp they’re really only guessing at the level of interest of a school, traveling around the country is costly, and there’s a finite amount of time to do this pre Jun15. When the date comes, an hour phone call is maybe all the two have to mutually get to know each other’s personality. From a coaches perspective, they have a list of kids they’re interested in and may feel pressure to get offers out to not lose a kid who maybe already has attended camp somewhere else while also allowing themselves time to work their way down their list if one of their kids come off the board. If they don’t want to blindly offer, the kid could end up elsewhere when in actuality, they may have been a better fit. The PSA, a 16 yo kid who has never been through this overwhelming process before, feels pressure to commit or risk losing the offer. Even if they’ve attended a camp and have a good handle on one school, there’s a good chance they get other offers or interest that they’ve been unable to investigate. This mad scramble leads to a ton of undue stress at a time that should be joyful and ultimately poorly informed major life decisions are made on both sides and no one, school or athlete, is better off for it. At a minimum, there should be a mandated cooling off period between offers or indications of interest/communication of where a kid ranks in a schools list and the date at which the PSA can actually commit so they have time to make informed decisions regarding prioritizing camps, campus visits and vetting colleges and programs. Actual acceptance day will still be chaos, but everyone will be better armed with information to find a good mutual fit and be able to fully commit and be all in without a nagging thought in the back of their head of ‘what if’. Most of Coach Booth’s recommendations make sense and you can nit pick the details here and there but it should definitely be a more graduated process.

In a lot of ways this kind of reminds me a lot of travel ball. As a club you want to fill a 12 person roster. You send offers out, but you don't want to send out more than 12. The girls have I think seven days to respond to the offers. You have a number of girls on your waiting list that you would like to send out offers once you get a declination. The parents of those girls on the waiting list have offers from other clubs (or so they tell you) but they come back to you looking for their status because they claim they really want to play for your club.
When push comes to shove eventually six or seven girls agree to play with your club. Now you send out six new offers but four of those girls have already committed to another club. Now you send out an additional four offers and it goes round and round until you get 12. Sometimes you end up with 13 or 14 because you overshoot.
You have a good season when you can get 10 of your first 12 to commit. If you only get six you will have a disastrous season.
I can empathize with the college coaches who don't want to wait too long for a commitment while trying to keep the second and third choices from straying away. Unfortunately, with college ball the stakes are higher. Some girls actually get 50 offers within a one week period. I don't see how you can make an educated choice with that many offers in a short time period.
Trying to appease both coach and player is a tough nut to crack. Ideally, I would like to see a one or two month grace period after offers are made, in which no offers can be accepted to allow the girls to make an educated choice. That would leave the colleges hanging and some could get shut out and have to start the process over again.

All these rankings are a joke. But I have to say, this vbadrenaline guy’s rankings are really laughable. I have no strong feelings about any of the rankings. They're just rankings--it's not that serious. Come up with your own rankings if you're brave enough. Someone will always disagree. I do like the idea of ranking by position though rather than a massive mixed list.

Tim this is exactly what’s happening and you describe it well. The time frame is all screwed up. Players and coaches should be able to start communicate in Feb and offers/official visits start in June. Nationals for club end in May. Shorten the club season. IMO.

Anyone have an idea where Morgan Williams and Bryah Breaux from Metro are likely to end up? With Nadiya Johnson committed I figured those two would quickly follow.
