The article should be required reading for any opposing fan intending to heckle her on these topics. Just don't people. Will you also expect Ohio State football fans to not heckle the Nebraska football players this fall?

Puts a different lens on this situation, doesn’t it? Mental health is no joke, can be debilitating, and impacts so many people around the world. Threads like this don’t help. Harper is working on getting the help she needs and is taking accountability. Maybe we can close this thread now and move on? ADHD, anxiety, and depression are clinical diseases, just like diabetes or high blood pressure. It's a shame there is so much stigma attached to them that makes it hard for people, especially perfectionists and high performers, to seek help. I say this from experience, and can't imagine being in Harper's shoes. I often say I am so glad there was no facebook or social media when I was in college (just AIM, IRC and MySpace, yes I know that ages me). Which brings me to another point: social media access needs to be as restricted as driving, or alcohol. People under 16 (and preferably until they are 18, imo) should not have access to social media. There are more and more studies that show the vast majority of Gen Zers feel that social media is responsible for their mental health decline, which stood out to me when reading Harper's story. (Here's one study: www.benningtonbanner.com/health/why-3-in-4-gen-z-blame-social-media-for-their-mental-health-decline/article_89a78460-73dc-56f8-9bf8-80862d4b069b.html)Things weren't perfect in the 80s and 90s, but I'm very glad we didn't have social media growing up.

I will say I don’t think there’s much of a stigma around ADHD any more. A lack of actual understanding, maybe. An over diagnosis (and, ironically, an under diagnosis) but it’s pretty much thrown out as a casual self attribution for whatever behavior is occurring without any hesitation or judgement. It’s even more ubiquitous these days than saying, “that’s my OCD kicking in,” which used to be used a lot, although that was very dismissive of what OCD is really like.

ADHD, there may be less of a stigma, but depression and anxiety, which are often co-morbidities to ADHD? Much less acceptable. Heck, we see more ads for old dudes who can't get it up than for any of these 3...

When I was younger, heckling opposing players seemed a lot more acceptable than it does now that I am older. I think the further you get in life, the more you realize that as Red Green said, "We're all in this together."

It’s even more ubiquitous these days than saying, “that’s my OCD kicking in,” which used to be used a lot, although that was very dismissive of what OCD is really like. I tend to think that sub-clinical OCD is essential to be a good engineer. Most engineers, for instance have a REALLY HARD TIME walking past an unfinished jigsaw puzzle without stopping to try to fit some pieces into it. Maybe 20 years ago I saw a therapist who was evaluating me for depression (which neither he nor I thought was what I had), and after talking to me he handed me some pamphlets on ADD. (Not ADHD, ADD.) And, like, wow. I was seen, you know? Like, almost every behavior I have was 100% stereotypical ADD. It was a revelation. Anyways, OCD tendencies combined with ADD tendencies is like the story of my life. Intense focus on things and also intense ADD (always needing to make everything a crisis so it is stimulating to focus on it, etc.). Oh well.

Anyways, OCD tendencies combined with ADD tendencies is like the story of my life. Intense focus on things and also intense ADD (always needing to make everything a crisis so it is stimulating to focus on it, etc.). Oh well. Not exactly the same story, but similar. I always saw any OCD type compulsions as semi coping mechanisms for an inability to focus on the mundane. Like the only way I could function was by being somewhat dysfunctional about where things go, the order I do things, that sort of thing. And as soon as I broke the seal and did them out of order or neglected something, my whole world order fell apart. I grew up when ADD wasn’t even on the radar yet. I would have been diagnosed in an instant in this day and age, from the moment I entered school. Later in my teens and 20s I was tested, but it was mostly being classified as a learning disorder and I had no issues there, so it wasn’t until my 30s and I flew to a specialist center to take the most nightmarish test of my life (it basically tested the ability to keep focus within stillness and silence for stretches of time) that I was diagnosed. I was always an amazing test taker, but I walked out of there and told the proctor, “I don’t know what I was being tested for, but I failed miserably.” I’ve had issues with pharmaceutical treatment, too. The quantities of stimulants I’ve taken don’t do anything for me. I was on 30 milligrams a day for adderall and I didn’t feel a thing. They kept wanting to push the dose higher and finally I said, “I’m good.” Coffee does nothing for me, regardless how much I drink. I’m sure cocaine or crystal meth would likely do the trick, but I avoid anything I think might be addictive. I remember helping a crystal meth addict one time and he was compulsively telling me about the high, “it’s like Ritalin…*but it works!*” he rasped at me crazily. I just felt a great big nope nope nope nope nope ringing through my head. Anyway, we’re all broken in our own ways, just trying to do the best that we can. There’s a lot of behavior of Murray’s I can personally relate to in ways it’s obvious other people on here can’t, it in the end we still need to obey the law. We still have social norms to abide by. I’ve suffered plebty of consequences for my issues, but not as many I there could have been, and all the consequences were deserved regardless of contributing factors. There’s no switch Murray can flick off. But she has some advantages and resources others don’t, and so I hope that helps her. I’m rooting for her success in different ways, but I like rooting for all kinds of people who overcome their struggles to achieve success. “Success is not measured by the position one has reached in life, rather by the obstacles one overcomes while trying to succeed” ― Booker T. Washington
