There are two different questions here. Most success collegiately (both individually and as a team) is one. That would have to be one of the 4-time 1st Team AA's with multiple team championships. Probably has to be Logan Tom or Megan Hodge. Relative popularity is the second, and would also have to be only based off an athlete's popularity at the end of their senior year in college. KWJ, Karch, and Tom are the biggest names, mostly because of Olympic success, but they weren't anywhere near as popular. The NCAA Women's Volleyball championship match had 10x less viewers than basketball, so it has to be relative. NIL era is getting Vball players to their most famous, but it still pales. Might be Asjia O'Neal because of her Texas deals, dad, #1 pick in the PVF status, and she was just on a daytime talk show, which I don't recall having previously happened. The thing is, it's the second question that's relevant. Because if we're talking about who had the most success collegiately, it can't be Clark. It would be one of the UConn legends (Stewart, Taurasi, Moore--take your pick, though I'd go with Stewart) or Holdsclaw, Miller, Parker, Griner, etc. Clark seems to be a once-in-a-generation ratings sensation. I'm not totally sure why she resonates with so many people in a way that other great players haven't, but she does. I think the only volleyball players who were even close to as famous were Misty May and Kerri Walsh due to their success in beach volleyball at the Olympics.

Cheryl Miller was a rock star as a basketball player in the 80’s. Drawing almost 12 million in 1984. To that point Basketball has always had an enormous advantage in exposure. It wasn’t until they moved the games to ESPN that the rating dropped off significantly. In Middle School you if you knew the name of one female basketball player, it was Cheryl Miller. www.sportsmediawatch.com/2024/04/most-watched-ncaa-womens-basketball-games-iowa-lsu-caitlin-clark-cheryl-miller/#:~:text=%239%3A%201993%20final%2C%20Texas,title%20game%20in%20seven%20years.

It's also not unexpected that ESPN is promoting women's basketball more because they have the rights to women's March Madness and not the men's.

I’m surprised no one brought up carlini. Was the star on an otherwise mid team that wasn’t getting much national attention before she went there. Obviously the popularity isn’t even close but relative to volleyball I feel she’s pretty similar in terms of impact.

The only current player with 3 national championships Clark finished with zero national titles. There is no even remote equivalent in volleyball. Carlini?

One of the most talented to ever play the game & without a title. Also didn't go to a super stacked team out of college. She's my vote all the way

This makes no sense. Clark isn’t even out of college yet. What does Karch’s post-college accomplishments have to do with anything? Did you not read the “3 national championships”? That was in college fyi. Clark had zero. Well then why write all the other crap? Karch won those titles 40 years ago, in a tiny men’s field. I believe the reason for the question is about what Clark has accomplished in terms of visibility in the sport, not just championships. Also, she has other accomplishments (all time score leader). I agree with the statement that vball is much more of a team sport and a comparison isn’t really possible anyway.

Definitely Misty May if we're talking US college vball. She had this allure. There was a growing legend as she competed in college. She would make these jaw dropping plays. Everyone was just in awe of her talent. If Misty May resurrected into a college player today we would see a big bump in viewership.
I don't think this talk about no title is very relevant. Some of these GOATs don't join super stacked teams.
Also it is possible to dominate volleyball. If college had a Boskovic, Haak or Egonu, we'd be seeing routine 40+ kill matches. US has never had that type of hitter.

VB is too much a team sport so it really is a moot question. It will be interesting to see if the numbers we seen this year will continue. A lot of it was Clark bringing eyes to arenas, and TV's that would not normally watch WBB.

"Who is the volleyball version of Caitlin Clark?"
Easy answer. There is no volleyball version of Caitlin Clark.
And of course Texas has to put one of their players as the Caitlin Clark of volleyball. Most people in this country whether they are fans of women's basketball or not know who Caitlin Clark is and what she has done for women's basketball. Very few people in this country have ever heard of Maddie Skinner.
Other than Michael Phelps I can't think of another amateur athlete male or female in any sport that brought the attention that Clark has to her sport. When she was on TV people watched.
And now that she is leaving college, I believe women's college basketball will start seeing a decline in interest.

Great, but difficult, question. It's sort of apples and oranges as volleyball is more reliant on a team game and it doesn't have the exposure that WBB has. To me I look at which recent players were the most dominant and exciting to watch. Three come to mind...Skylar Fields, Dana Rettke, and, Morgan Hentz. I considered Plummer, but while she was certainly dominant I didn't consider her to be as a exciting as the other three. The 2023 tournament Madi Skinner also comes close and I could be talked into it if she has a similar 2024.

I'm not sure if we have a Caitlin Clark, but I think Coach Busboom, could be our Dawn Staley, NCs as a player, and AC. Needs an NC as a HC and a gold medal for the slam.
