Hawaii moving all sports to the Mountain West starting 2026. Does MVB stay in the BWC or move to the MPSF?

TBH I think Hawaii is done paying travel subsidies. It was a very bad deal by previous UHAD. Big West schools were coming here on UH’s dime and using the free trips as a recruiting tool as well. UH gets the subsidies removed or moves to the MPSF. The MPSF will have better competion and premium names for much larger fan attendance.
With Hawks hired at UCLA I do see them coming to the islands more often either way.

I am sure the Big West can get concordia Irvine to move there instead. Would save CUI money.

full spectrum news article regarding hawaii becoming a full member of the mountain west: spectrumlocalnews.com/hi/hawaii/sports/2024/10/15/hawaii-athletics-joins-mountain-west-leaves-big-west-2024?cid=app_share• • • • • • • • • in regards to uhmvb, the article had a q&a section with uhad craig angelos: Q: What happens to the sports the Mountain West does not sponsor? A: The four of them — men’s volleyball, beach volleyball, women’s water polo and men’s swimming and diving — will hopefully be able to remain in the Big West Conference. But that is a decision that has to be made by the board of the Big West Conference. If they elect not to allow us to stay, then we would try to get all those four in the MPSF. Q: It sounds like you are hopeful they will be allowed to remain as an affiliate? A: Yes, we’re very hopeful that would be the case. I mean, we love the Big West Conference. This move had nothing to do with the Big West Conference. It was just something we needed to shore up, because we’re an FBS football program. We have a great relationship with Big West. We’re hoping that they will want our other four teams to stay in there. Q: If UH is allowed to remain as an affiliate member in the aforementioned four sports, would you have to pay travel subsidies to the Big West in those? A: That’s a very good question. It’s a little early to know that right now.

I think the only way Hawaii stays is if the BWC get rid of that ridiculous 25k affiliate fee and/or travel subs. 3 of those 4 programs (MVB, Water Polo, Beach Volleyball) are top 10 ranked teams nationally year after year. MVB, Water polo and Men's swim and dive have already played in the MPSF in the past. The AD is playing it cool but he is really good at positioning Hawaii as best he can. And tbh, he is more aggressive than other AD'S that UH has had and that's good for us.

There is not much incentive for the Big West to allow those sports to remain imo, especially with no affiliate fee (which at 25k is nothing). Why would they want to allow MVB to remain and compete for the auto bid rather than pushing them into the MPSF where Hawai’i will have a harder time simply making the tournament? It’s also not like Charlie Wade is all that popular with the other Big West coaches. I like Hawai’i in the Big West, but if they are putting what’s in their own best interest first, they can’t expect other teams not to do the same.

Haha MPSF or Big west....I could care less at this point. Hawaii will excel in either especially with these sports which they have for years.

I hope our 4 teams can continue to compete in the Big West. I would especially miss those MVB grudge matches vs the Beach and Irvine. Does anyone know if the MPSF Men's VB will be impacted by the PAC 12 departures?

I wish the Hawaii Athletic Department would quit kidding themselves, thinking the Hawaii Football Program is a FBS football program. The Hawaii Football Program is at Best a FCS program. I mean, what FBS football program plays their football games on a High School football field. The Hawaii Athletic Program needs to serious think about dropping their football program to the FCS level, try to enter the Big Sky Conference, and keep all their other sports in the BWC.

That's a negative. As much as Hawaii has been in the crapper....they still help pay the bills for most of the other Olympic sports and the dept. Dropping them down to FCS is a non-option though I recognize it's been a rough decade if you are a UH football fan.

If the other BWC schools can do it, without football, or having a football team in the FCS, why would Hawaii not be able to, just wondering.
