I thought we could start a general discussion about the Men's National Team now that the international season and Paris Olympics are just around the corner.
The 2024 VNL wide roster is available on the even website:
S: Christenson, Ma'a, Tuaniga, Isaacson, Slight OPP: Anderson, Garcia, Ensing, K. Russell, Hanes OH: Defalco, A. Russell, Jaeschke, Muagututia, Pasteur, Kessel, Wildman, Champlin, Ewert MB: Smith, Holt, Jendryk, Averill, Gasman, Knigge, Marshman, Wetter L: Shoji, Dagostino, Briggs
I haven't checked out the other teams just yet but I figured we would have a separate thread for the VNL in due time.
What does everyone think of the roster?

Good for Slight! Happy to see him on the wide roster.
Hmmm. I love Champlin and Pasteur. I do. But I think we have some pretty good OHs out there playing Pro right now that should've been considered. Obviously, it's just a wide roster and we'll be more focused on getting DeFalco/Russell/Jaeschke/Muagututia back in synergy, but I would've liked to see some other guys in the gym.
Anyone know how Wildman's first pro season went?

I'm excited to see Gabi Garcia with the team. I'm betting he will be the answer in Anderson isn't able to terminate.
How was his pro season this year?

As in, wasn't even starting for the team by the end of the season. Maybe it'll be different when he's being set by Christenson but Gabi is not terminal. He's BLOCKABLE 😂😂😂

He's BLOCKABLE 😂😂😂 Oof. Welp. Who do you think will fill that back up Opp spot? I mean, probably Gabi or Ensing. Whoever plays best in VNL and can connect with Ma'a for the double sub (if we ever use it). Fortunately, like akbar has pointed out, with the early rounds format change in Paris, Anderson will get enough rest between matches that the backup won't be a do-or-die situation. As long as Matt is healthy, he'll always be out there. But I hope Speraw has a contingency plan that includes DeFalco moving to OPP and play Russell/Jaeschke should Matt struggle.

To re-ask my question from earlier this summer.... Will this be the oldest USA Olympic roster ever?
Assuming the following roster: Aaron Russell- Outside Hitter, 6-9-Age 31 in Paris TJ DeFalco-Outside Hitter, 6-5-Age 27 in Paris Thomas Jaeschke-Outside Hitter, 6-6-Age 30 in Paris Matt Anderson-Opposite/Outside Hitter, 6-10-Age 37 in Paris Micah Christenson-Setter, 6-5--Age 31 in Paris Micah Ma’a-Setter, 6-37-Age 27 in Paris Max Holt-Middle Blocker, 6-10--Age 37 in Paris Jeff Jendryk-Middle Blocker, 6-10-Age 28 in Paris David Smith-Middle Blocker, 6-7--Age 39 in Paris Erik Shoji-Libero, 6-0 (184 cm)-Age 34 in Paris Garrett Muagututia-Outside Hitter, 6-5-Age 36 in Paris Taylor Averill-Middle Blocker, 6-7-Age 32 in Paris Gabbie Garcia-Opposite 6-8-Age 25 in Paris
The average age is 31.85....going back to 2008, these are the approximate average ages (I calculated based on birth year and competition year, not birth day/competition start) 2008 30.1 2012 30.7 2016 28.0 2020 29.1

I don't forsee anyone younger than DeFalco/Ma'a/Gabi breaking into this group.

But if you have a Defalco aged player replace one of the 37+ year olds---it will cut almost .75 off the average...do it twice, and you are younger than 2012...
