West Virginia finishes 2-1 on the weekend. So close to a 3-0 debut for Greeny.

Offensive Player of the Week Melanie Parra, TCU, OH, Sr.
Defensive Player of the Week Kate Georgiades, Houston, L, Gr.
Rookie of the Week Carlie Cisneros, Arizona, OH, Fr.
TCU’s Melanie Parra (offensive), Houston’s Kate Georgiades (defensive) and Arizona’s Carlie Cisneros (rookie) acquired the league’s weekly volleyball honors for the first week of the 2024 season.
Parra led the league with 5.44 points per set and 0.88 service aces per set while facing two Power 4 teams with a 3-1 win over Oklahoma and a four-set match against No. 2 Nebraska. The Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year recorded 20 kills with only two errors for a .429 hitting percentage in the victory over the Sooners while tallying a career-high seven service aces, the second most by a Horned Frog in program history. The native of Sinaloa, Mexico finished with 14 kills and 10 digs on the road against the Cornhuskers while helping TCU become just the fourth non-conference opponent in the last three years to take a set from Nebraska in Lincoln during the regular season. This is Parra’s third weekly league honor.
Georgiades had a league-high 5.22 digs per set while helping Houston to victories over Nebraska-Omaha and a Washington State team that made the NCAA Regional Semifinals in 2023. Against the Mavericks, the 2023 Big 12 Libero of the Year led the match with 25 digs, her 45th career match with 20 or more digs. The graduate student followed with 22 digs against the Cougars to secure her second career weekly Big 12 accolade.
Cisneros recorded 34 kills and averaged 3.09 kills per set with a .373 hitting percentage to lead Arizona to a sweep of the Cactus Classic. Arizona’s highest-rated recruit in program history (No. 1 nationally by PrepVolleyball) notched two double-doubles in her debut weekend while tallying 12 or more digs in all three matches. She is the first Arizona student-athlete to earn a Big 12 weekly volleyball award.

Carlie Cisneros is the first Arizona volleyball athlete to win any conference weekly award since Puk Stubbe was a 2-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in 2021. Of course, Carlie is just out of high school and Puk was already 21 at the time. lol

Yes Kate Georgiades picking up where she left off last year winning the opening Big12 Defensive PoW award!
To give a quick Coog rundown, they went 2-0 against Omaha and Washington St. in the Omaha tournament last weekend. Transfer OH Angela Grieve from Miami has been excellent so far (12k .294 and 17k .333) and returning Sr RS Katie Corelli hit .303 and .565 in the two matches. No sign yet of Pitt transfer OH Julianna Dalton which is surprising to me at least. UH started a RS-FR OH Ashlyn Bellamy against Omaha and true FR OH Lilly Barron against WSU (hit well in that match) opposite Grieve. UH is playing a 6-2 offense again this year with Annie Cooke (4 year starter) as one setter and Rebecca Rocassin (xfer from J'ville) as the other. Cooke had a crazy 10 point match against WSU with 5 aces and 5 kills - she's only playing back row in 6-2 so must have all been below-tape dumps which she's very good at. Avery Shimaitis (xfer from Pepperdine) is the 2nd RS behind Corelli. Two new starters at MB this year in SR Barakat Rahmon and true FR Addisyn Pohl as would-be returning starter (and Big12 hitting% leader last year) Kellen Morin blew ACL in the spring.

I noticed neither Duckworth nor Gonzalez started for Iowa St vs Wake Forest. Are they hurt or did they just get beat out?

big12sports.com/news/2024/9/10/ranked-victories-lead-to-week-2-big-12-volleyball-national-awards-for-baylor-kansas-and-tcu.aspxParra gets POTW two weeks in a row. I do think she’s arguably the best player in the conference, but I’m wondering if we feel someone else was more deserving - or rather what the voters criteria will be going forward? If we’re talking who scored the most points, of course it’s Parra, but the number of swings she is taking is absurd and ultimately she hit .250. Also - where are setters going to fall on this list? Yes, I’m biased, but Turner had quite a week and Kansas’ offense is among the very best in the country. I also think Claire Little put up big time numbers against Libscomb, and especially Georgia Tech, that might’ve warranted a look.

Week 2 POW
Offensive Player of the Week Melanie Parra, TCU, OH, Sr.
Defensive Player of the Week Lauren Briseño, Baylor, L/DS, Sr.
Rookie of the Week Zoey Burgess, Kansas, MB, Fr.
TCU’s Melanie Parra (offensive), Baylor’s Lauren Briseño (defensive) and Kansas’ Zoey Burgess (rookie) claimed league honors for the second week of the volleyball season. This week’s selections mark the first time since 2019 that the league’s Preseason Player (Parra) and Freshman (Burgess) of the Year have won weekly awards in the same week. Parra was also named the AVCA/GameChanger Division I Player of the Week.
Parra ranked second in the Big 12 during the week in points per set (5.65) and kills per set (5.10) while facing then-No. 6 Wisconsin and then-No. 18 Minnesota. The Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge for the second year in a row after totaling 51 kills in just 10 sets of volleyball. She led the Horned Frogs to victory over the Golden Gophers in five sets where the 2023 All-Big 12 First Team honoree racked up 30 kills on a program-record 92 attacks. It marked just the ninth 30-kill match in TCU volleyball history and the first in the Big 12 this season. The senior from Sinaloa, Mexico recorded double-doubles in both matches with 21 kills in a five-set match against the Badgers paired with 17 digs and adding 12 digs against Minnesota. This is Parra’s second consecutive Offensive Player of the Week honor as she guided TCU into the top 25 for the first time in program history.
Briseño led the Bears to a top 20 victory over Minnesota while defeating Rice and taking Wisconsin to five sets during the week. The 2023 All-Big 12 Second Team selection had 31 digs (6.20 digs per set) in the victory over the Golden Gophers while posting a double-double against UW with 17 digs and 10 assists. During the match against Minnesota, she recorded her 1000th career dig. The senior ended the week with zero reception errors and 32 receptions. This is the first career Conference weekly honor for Briseño.
Burgess had a breakout week for the Jayhawks, recording 12 total blocks across three matches, including helping KU defeat then-No. 24 Marquette in four sets. The league’s Preseason Freshman of the Year’s 1.33 blocks per set tied for the second-best in the league during the week while adding 17 kills to help KU go 3-0 and rise to rank No. 11 rank nationally. It is the Alpine, Utah native's first career league weekly honor.

Still see Top 3 as TCU, Kansas, and ASU battling it out. I feel there are a few others in the next group of teams below them that will challenge, but that's tbd.
