Something positive: I liked Tommy picking up the slack at the pins and going toe-to-toe with Maar. I'd like to see him get the start regularly with TJ at this point. Not that this was unknown, but Matt, TJ and Erik make a big difference in the overall ball control for the US. I also think that Averill may be the strongest offensive middle but he does struggle to make reads and block at times. While Canada's block didn't score many points, they had a lot of controlled blocks that basically turned US attacks into free balls. If the Canadian block didn't slow down a US attack, it funneled it right to the floor defense which was so good for Canada! Canada's transition > USA's transition today. And this is the exact same thing they got them against Italy. If we don't get it on FBSO, we're really struggling to win the point.

Speraw clearly isn't trying to make the finals. If he was, he would keep the starters on the court longer and not role out the bench. I didn't watch the match because I was traveling so I'm not sure what all went down. This team looks streaky, at best which isn't great. However, the team needs to peak in time for the Olympics, not now. I'm curious what the game plan actually is here. the game plan is to not have a plan until teh Olympics. that's pretty clear by now.

TJ is on the younger side, I don’t buy that he needs to rest here. Unless there was some undisclosed injury they were cautious about. What happened to declaring the roster early and “experimenting”? He could have played right side or even see if he can play from cold off bench on left side.

on good side: Canada has all the starters(correct?) and USA does keep close on the last two without Anderson/TJ/Shoji(hope he will be healthy soon). My summary is the following OH: Jaeschke, passing great (some overpasses), attacking great, serving great, really well-round. Russell, what happened to passing? what happened to attacking? Should have substituted earlier. Oppo: Today it happened, Anderson has a rough first set, and Ensing. I know he tried his best, but still, he scored pretty bad efficiency as an oppo. All OOS pressure is on Tommy, as Ensing gets blocked/touches. He won't be in Paris anyway, so what the is solution? TJ as a second oppo? with Tommy and Garret/Russell as OH? Middle: Still do not know how to do block/defense on Maar. Not a lot of touches. sigh.. Libero: hope Shoji feel better soon. Dag tried his best.

I want to see TJ on right side together with Tommy/Garret/Russell(whoever two fits together with ball control and attack). The lack of second oppo does require an immediate solution. I'm not sure if Speraw knows that. This is very concerning.

Tbh, I have low hopes with USA making the Top 8. Japan looks good, and USA is playing inconsistently. I also don't know what Speraw's game plan is. I need Serbia to flop for my Cuba agenda.

If Hanes can play at a levellike he did in VNL week one, What's the reason not bringing him to Paris? 4 MB is too many...

I agree that if they are experimenting, we would have seen another person from the Olympic roster playing at Opp and not Ensing. This is the perfect time to try it out. And also trying Ma’a. I don’t think they are experimenting, they are just not in the form they needed to be yet both individually and as a team for now.

Russell got subbed out pretty late when Garret come in, proving he still wants to win? But TJ did not take off his jacket when Matt struggles, and instead Ensing who will not go to Paris goes on court. You are correct the form looks concerning. Paris results may not be better than Tokyo.

#1 apologies to our Canadian Neighbors. Your boys have really gotten good this past year overseas and it shows. Congrats on playing a terrific match in all aspects.
I'm sure "disappointing" is a word that all is us USA fans share about this week's results. The VNL tourney is indeed a young and hungry team's tourney. And every team is hungry to beat a USA uniformed team.
It will be interesting to see how we approach week 3. If any guys are not 100% healthy they may stay home and train and rehab and this may open the door to see some new faces again on the floor.
I will not address any particular players play good or bad but I do have a question about our situational defense where we have sooooo many balls deflecting off our blocks at the pins and our defenders are so shallow that we can't pick up anything. It was a ton of balls landing in the blue that old school defense would've picked up.
Again I don't know the analytics on this scheme that we run and I guess if we are serving in and we'll it may work out best to be pinched in....but not this tourney it seems to me.
Just musing.
