The subject is a bit misleading, it’s a scholarship limit, not roster size.

I could see 2025 and 2026 commits reopening their recruitment as several top schools may want to add players. But again, only 6 see the court at any one time, so it is hard to judge. With football having so many more scholarships, women’s sports needed increased slots, but 18 seems excessive.

No, it appears to be a roster limit, and you can give scholarships up to the roster size. Big issue for some football teams with large walk on classes, they need to reduce size significantly. Rosters now are not limited, scholarships are limited to 12. In 2025, rosters can’t exceed 18, but all 18 can get scholarships.

I get baseball needs more than softball just because of pitching - but THAT many for either is crazy.

Another important point: All sports will be considered "equivalency" sports. No more requirements for full scholarships. Schools can structure it however they want, as long as they don't exceed the roster limit. This is probably more important to non-revenue sports, and smaller schools, who will have more tight budgeting, I would think.

Rich get richer. So many sports can't afford to fully fund as it is. Especially the baseball and softballs that have not been equivalency sports up until now.

So a team could fund 14 full scholarships and have 18 on the roster? Giving out 10 full rides and 8 half rides? I wonder if the conferences like the B1G will mandate full scholarships

Also, isn’t this good for Liberos? They were commonly offered less than 4 year rides due to scholarship limits… now beyond budget, does a coach really have a reason to offer a 2/4?

Most won’t scholarship player 14-18. They will just use cash to pay top players even more than the scholarship.

If scholarship "equivalency" is in play, this is a game changer. Being able to "stack" athletic scholarships with academic offerings frees up a lot of money for Lib/DS types and players not on full 4 year opportunities.

Example, Susie is on a full scholarship but is also a 4.0 student and would have qualified for a 15k scholarship. Coach can now take that 15k and spread it to others not on full scholarship.

Can roster maybe mean how many can be eligible to play in a match? i.e. You might have 20 bodies in the practice gym every day, but only 18 can be listed on the roster to play in the upcoming match. The next day the roster can be a different set of bodies.
