She may want to leave for a better education in the west. So good for her. She is a smart girl.

And her sister went to Mizzou, don't forget. I don't know enough about the situation...is there some bad blood between the Ailes family and NU? Or do the kids simply want to go away to school?

Stanford, and other top programs, are full of ladies who left home, and local colleges to go to school away from the roost. Richards didn't follow her sister to BYU, Barboza left behind all the programs in LA, same with Klineman, etc. Texas can say the same thing with many of their current recruits. Nebraska seems to have deeper roots in the community but many atheletes just seem to want to get away from home. And it is warmer in Palo Alto than Lincoln.

Well, there you have it: sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=2702418With a father who's a professor at Hawaii and every opportunity to be successful on the pro tour , Michelle Wie passes it all up to go to Stanford. Notice a theme here??

I guess she just took the chance, and now she'll be able to meet her. BTW, is 6'1" Wie eligible to play vball? U$C and Nebraska have used pros, so why can't $tanford.

Why would Wie ever want to play volleyball at Stanford? The risk of injury to her multi-million dollar empire is far too great.

Well... I am going to be the one that is not politically correct today. I cannot imagine growing up in the heart of Husker Volleyball country and choosing another school over Nebraska. It would be like growing up in the backyard of Stanford and watching Tom and Walsh and then choosing Nebraska. Good luck to Gabi. I think she's crazy but it is her choice. While a little odd, I am not quite sure why this is a surprise. This is exactly how Fiona Nepo reacted. She was a top prep in Hawaii. She went to University High, the school right next to the university. Shoji had built a stronghold on the local talent in Hawaii for years. His influence was all over the club programs. Girls all over the islands aspired to play as a Wahine. The SSC was just opening up and she would play in the biggest arena at the time. She was being looked at to take the reigns of the Wahine program after Ah Mow finished in 1996. But instead, she wanted to expand her horizons and decided to leave the islands for Nebraska. And as a Husker, she ended up a 3 time AA. In ways, this is the same for Ailes. Yes, she grew up watching Husker volleyball and so many girls from Nebraska dream about putting on the Husker uniform. But it's not the fit for every single player and I commend her for leaving the familiar for the unknown. As odd as it may feel, we just have to wish every player the best and let them live with their decisions.
