Stanford is the x factor for recruits. It is the one institution that pretty much trumps all others in recruiting. It has national appeal, and the degree is the most prestigious of all top programs by a long shot. Having recruited at that level, it was the one school you did not want to hear mentioned by players you were recruiting. It is hard to beat them in any area. They are as good or better than any volleyball team, their athletic dept (for olympic sports) is as good if not better than everyones, the degree is as good or probably better, and their campus and campus life is as well. Any school whould be lucky to have 1or 2 of those things, let alone all of them.

I agree with you a large percentage of the time key but its posts like this that continue to perpetuate the myth that Stanford is superior to all others. I am surprised at you. It gives others the impression that no one else can educate or have a sports program that is even near Stanfords ideals. That is just not true. Yes they are an excellent school with excellent programs. Many other schools can boast of the same. As far as volleyball goes.......... here I go being politically incorrect again but.... in my opinion an accomplishment like NU,... to be at the top for the last decades and win National Championships is a far greater challenge than a school that year after year gets the very best the nation has to offer in recruits.

A few other programs that can boast many of the same qualities that Keystone mentions are University of Florida and University of Texas. Stanford is not alone, but I do understand Keystone's point. If I were to go up to the first 50 friends within earshot and told them I had a chance to go either Stanford, Texas, or Flordia on a free ride, I'd bet at least 90% of them would say "pick Stanford" without losing a beat.
*But then again, if I lived on the East Coast and all my friends were from the East Coast, would "Stanford" be the first name out of their mouth? Not so sure.*

In ways, this is the same for Ailes. Yes, she grew up watching Husker volleyball and so many girls from Nebraska dream about putting on the Husker uniform. But it's not the fit for every single player and I commend her for leaving the familiar for the unknown. Her choosing to go to Stanford was a disappointment for NU volleyball fans, to be sure. Personally, though, I feel just as you do, Roy. I left Nebraska for undergrad in New England, and that single decision was one of the most important choices I've made. If you can survive the first semster homesickness, the strength you gain from striking out on your own is immeasurable.

Sometimes a kid just wants to get away from where they grew up and see life "out there", you know? There might be a great program right next door, but sometimes it's nice to strike out on your own a little bit.

Succinct and to the point....your synopsis is dead on....I remember the first time I ever went to that campus...I was completely in awe and blown away that a place as beautiful as stanford even existed.

She may want to leave for a better education in the west. So good for her. She is a smart girl. Oh brother !!!! Yet another reference that anyone who does not attend Stanford is an idiot. I was going to use the rolling eyes happy face,.... but it was not quite enough in this reply. Actually I think you read too much into it. Stanford is a top school (there are no if ands about it, it is), going there would be a great route for a great education. That by no means, says you are stupid for not going there. It just says she's a smart girl and she picked a top school. I would agree. Sometimes a kid just wants to get away from where they grew up and see life "out there", you know? There might be a great program right next door, but sometimes it's nice to strike out on your own a little bit. Agreed, and some just want to experience something different.

Holiday, you are suprised I would say this? As I have mentioned, I don't see why people can't be fans of one program, but aknowledge others, or just the plain truth. I never said that other schools don't have lots to offer, or that other schools can't educate kids. My point is, that Stanford in the 4-5 categories that matter to kids, is probably the best or near the best in all of them. Someone mentioned Texas as a comparison, which is fair. Texas is very good academically, but not in the class of Stanford, their voleyball program is great, not in the class of Stanford. Campuses are both great, womens athletics are both great. Tommy Lee Jones went to Harvard, he was Al Gore's roommate.
