Well, we were seeded in 04 and 06 but still didn't host.
The pre-season tourney, as it stands now, should be a great one. I'm a little concerned that it may be a little too much, too soon for the freshman.
I'm more concerned about replacing the passing than I am the hitting. Only Roehrig has seen substantial time. It looked like they were trying to get Hagerty some playing time late in the year so she may have the inside track. The spring season should be interesting to see where they may position players. An excellent opportunity for Katie V., Hagerty, and Schmidt to show what they can do. Good opportunities for Fallon, Chin, and Wilbur, too.

Not just seeded, but highly seeded. Oh, well.
I agree that 2007 should be a very interesting season for the Gophers and, at the outset, scary. A number of interesting variables: will Hartmann improve (I think so)? will the fabulous freshmen have an immediate impact (don't think so), and the area that concerns me most, where will the defense come from to keep opponents hitting below, say, .180? We've been spoiled by the Gentil/Penieta era. Tan impressed me last year, but get beyond her and who on this team can dig? Kyla and Jessie can block but can't play the whole rotation. So we will definitely need the DSs to step up. But Hebert's unwillingness to play Fallon, Chin, and Wilbur last year, none of whom were mere freshmen, does not give one cause for optimism.

It (the clinic) was impressive -- as was their defense against Florida in the regional. They may not have some of their better passers, and may struggle at the outset, but I believe their D will be impressive again next year.

for the Women of Troy....
OH Kaczor Copenhagen Gysin Kimmee Roleder
MB Johansen Bishop Tennant Siemiatkowska Lauren Williams Zoe Garrett
S Carico Wilson
Libero Hillgren Geena Urango...possible OH too
I'm sure there will be some walk-ons beyond that...five seniors as well for USC...it's an interesting mix and the key will probably be how soon can the freshman integrate into the system...
I'm looking forward to 2007...I think there will be a LOT of great teams out there....the more, the better....

<off topic slightly> Killingsworth is just a cool name for volleyball, isn't it? I always think it is a great name to have if you're a volleyball player. </off topic> I agree...unfortunately although "Kill" is a volleyball term, many of my sign ideas were not allowed since its one of the words that security has to check signs for. hahahah Florida sucks, i feel bad for you. That's incredibly stupid.

Chance, you've been fairly civil lately. What's up with the above post?

But Hebert's unwillingness to play Fallon, Chin, and Wilbur last year, none of whom were mere freshmen, does not give one cause for optimism. Just curious, but for whom would they have played? Chin or Fallon could have played _instead_ of Wilbur, but where else? (And I'm guessing RB was not Chin's position.) Cowles should help immediately on defense -- as could Dieter. I like this team. My biggest concern is depth in the middle and setter. An injury could be devastating. They haven't had a major injury since Shudlick/Pearman (knock on wood).

An injury at setter would be devasting. I think they could survive an injury at middle with Schmidt and Gibbemeyer. Hopefully, we won't need to find out either scenario.

She is a very good defensive player and can pass well too. That way Roleder's heavy arm would be of use on the OH.

I wonder if [Coach Haley] would think about putting Gysin at libero? She is a very good defensive player and can pass well too. That way Roleder's heavy arm would be of use on the OH. Unless Gysin has some sort of ongoing medical problem that limits her offense or blocking, her value as a libero might be greater as a strategic substitution between games. After seeing the impact Colby Lyman made against USC the week after UCLA's loss to Stanford in Maples, I wondered how a switch to Lyman during the Stanford match would have affected the outcome. Now that I think about it, I remember the Mexican soccer player who was both a starting goalkeeper and a backup striker for their national team. When subbing out a striker, sometimes Mexico would sub in the backup keeper and bring him forward... and he had to change his uniform, just as anyone changing between libero and non-libero does in volleyball (except for injury, it only happens between games).

For Hawaii fans;
anyone know what the chances are that Jayme Lee gets a scholarship next year? I know Shoji hasn't been one to give a scholarship to a libero, but I think that is one person who deserves it, no?

Liz Kaaihue in receiving a scholarship for next year, so there's no way 2 liberos will get a scholarship. She is a great story though, she could have gone to Duke or the Air Force Academy but it was her dream to play volleyball for UH.

To respond to Ruffda:
Chin, Wilbur, and Fallon were beaten out of the spot of first sub in the backcourt by Tan, a freshman. When experienced players lose out to a freshman, that, to me, is a vote of no-confidence on the part of the coaches.

Or a vote of confidence for Tan?
