Banachowski is only following the Al Scates plan of having 20-30 players. The big difference of course is the guys are all on partial or no scholarships at UCLA while the women have 12 full rides. Of course every coach in America is trying to recruit the best possible players each year. If the Freshman starts ahead of a returning starter so be it. What is wrong is if a coach recruits a player and then has to run off a player to have a scholarship for the recruit. Don't know if that is the case hear but that would be wrong in my not so great opinion.

It is amazing how Banachoski pushes girls out to make room for transfers--Haley Jorgensborg out to make room for Meriweather--Brenn Larson and Kelsey Hall out to scholarship Ali Dailey--Becky Green Mehring to make way for Laura Holloway. Interesting??? Can't be that great of an experience if at least five will not return next season--Jordan Smith, Blair Socci, Stacy Dominguez, Becky Green, Jessica Fine. I would be cautious if I was being recruted by UCLA. There is definitely a trend here.

And I thought beachman's comments are insulting, these are worse, why don't you get your facts right before posting. Jorgensborg left because she cannot beat out Krystal McFarland for the setter's spot and she also knew that Spicer is coming in. Meriwether was offered the scholarship (due to the graduation of Cira Wright, nothing to do with Jorgensborg's departure)) when Jessica Gysin decided to go to USC. Brenn Larson had a injury plagued career and she retired. Daley got the scholarship that was vacanted by Nancy Barba. it was offered to Whitney Dosty first. Kelsey Hall left because she will not see court time which is why 11 players instead of 12 are on scholarships in 2006. Lyman, Carter, Meriwether Johnson, Schoen, Mehring Daley, Spicer, Carstersen, Sather Clements. actually for the past few years, UCLA frequently had 11 players on scholarships because they tends to missed out on the top recruits who make late decisions. though 3 seniors graduated in 2006, they have 4 scholies to give to incoming players (Mills, McGraw, Nucci AND HOLLOWAY( this was make possible becausse Klineman chose Stanford), it had nothing to do with players being forced to leave. Since Mehring decides to leave, there will again be 11 players on scholies next year Johnson, Schoen Daley, Sather, Holloway, Spicer, Carstensen Clements Mills, Nucci, McGraw. They will have 3 scholarships to give in 2008 even thought only 2 seniors graduates

UCLA has 1 2008 scholarship tied up in midwest stud Sara Sage. She is a 6'3" player that is as physical as they come. She was ripped and mature in the 8th grade when she was first offered by UCLA. She could be a big impact in 2008 and beyond.

Girls leave for different reasons, some have personal things, like the talented Becky (Green) Merhring, whose husband and new son became the #1 priority, totally understandable, and a big loss to the program. Second, others leave for reasons that are discreetly not talked about. Third, some are just burnt out on volleyball, since they had been playing most of their whole entire life, and want to pursue other interest. 4th, Andy tells all the girls the same thing at UCLA from the start, you have to not only earn the right to start, but you have to continue to earn it or you could be beat out by someone who is working harder, or playing better.

Another factor to consider in light of so many walk-ons walking off is that they used their volleyball skills simply to GET IN to UCLA. Similarly to years past, UCLA received more applications this year than any other school in the country. If memory serves, 50,697 applicants for appox. 4500 openings. A 4.0 GPA does not get you into UCLA anymore...but once you're in, you're in. Not saying that the girls weren't academically capable, just that walking on for a year greased the skids to get in. Actually, dumb like a fox seems fitting.

This really is an excellent observation, one true of the men's team as well.....also explains the lack of winning championships as some of these players are really more interested/concerned with a way into school(get priority on classes, etc.) than they are working and training hard enough to win a champiionship....kind of goes with the "rollin out the balls" mentality that Andy has!

I am not sure how many scholarships UCLA has available, but I do know that number just shrunk by one. Andy just received a MB commitment today, and I am not talking about Gil. This one is from a few time zones away.

This one is from a few time zones away. is it for 2008 or 2009? UCLA will have quite a few scholies to give for 2009, one of them is for Bojana Todorovic
