They're not getting excited too early. Considering that excitement is essential to the program's postseason success, they need to start as soon as possible.
The last few years the Wahine have been the bumblebees of volleyball -- just to look at their physical attributes, you wouldn't think they'd be capable of reaching such great heights. But fortunately for them, the last few years the Wahine have also been The Little Engine That Could -- their fans, coaches, and inferior WAC opponents convince them that they actually have a chance at beating whichever PAC10 team they'll face in a Regional this year.
All this ridiculous hype over their average recruits is the Hawai'ian equivalent of "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...."

I respect your opinion, but the recruits Hawaii have committed to play for the program this and next season are really good. They can compete with anybody in the country including any PAC-10 team. They have beaten PAC-10 teams last season, one of them USC who was a Final Four contender. Hawaii should be the last of your worries, if that is what's bothering you. With Sarah Pavan, Christina Houghtailing, and Jordan Larson. I don't think anybody in the country has a chance beating Nebraska not even Stanford or any other team from the PAC-10.

I disagree with you on that one, Nebraska is soooooo beatable even with two national player of the years.....Penn St. is very capapble of beating Nebraska and so is Stanford.....Look at Nebraska's season when they had Cepero, Kropp, Pilakowski, etc....They were ranked #1 that year I believe it was 2001 when they won the title in 2000.....They had that same core coming back the next season but they got dropped from Hawai'i and they had the home court advantage.....So, I dont think Nebraska will win it this season but who knows....But I do know one thing, and that is Nebraska will be very very hard to beat.....but still beatable...

2002 was when Hawaii travelled to Nebraska for the regional. 2001 was Willoughby's year. I think he is talking about 2001 right after the Huskers won their title. They would return AA Metcalf into the line up after she sat out a year from trying out with the national team. Everyone thought that 2001 would be the unstoppable coming into the season. But I think the lost to Long Beach in an early season tournament and Stanford knocked them out Final Four.

Nebraska was in the Final Four in 2001, but Stanford beat them in the Semifinal. Long Beach State defeated Arizona in the other match.
Anyway, Metcalf was never the type player Pavan is today. She never dominated like Pavan. Larson is just peaking at the right time for the Huskers. I think this Husker team is way better than the Husker team in 2001 with Metcalf, Holmquist, Pilakowski, and Cepero.

Hawai'i has been a contender since the early 80's. As an aside, there is NO okina within the word "Hawaiian". Which I have acknowledged, but my point was that in the past they have been contenders in large part due to an occasional (if not always steady) succession of superstar players. While some VTers have suggested that any coach could succeed at a big-name program because of the quality of recruits, Hawai'i proves to be the exception. The last few years they have maintained their status as contenders, reaching the Regional Final several times despite not having a superstar player who was a clear top 10 recruit or developed into a POY candidate. That is precisely why Shoji must be included in any discussion of top coaches.
