From the pictures at the USA Volleyball site Westwood has only 7 players? This is impressive considering they played with no substitutions against what would be considered some of the best college level athletes. Even with the departure of Meriwether, Carter and Lyman I have to believe this UCLA team will be as cohesive and competitive as last years final four team. They have 12 players on the roster, for some reason, five of them are not in the photo, Carstensen did play as a middle in some of the matches.

I am hoping that Johnson will move back to the outside, she was playing remarkably as an outside in 2005 (had a breakout match against Washington), however, it would not be practical for her and Carter to play outside in 2006 since neither can handle passing duties. She definitely can terminate at the left , pack more heat than the other UCLA OHs and does not look totally comfortable playing middle. With the arrival of Holloway, Johnson will probably stay in the middle BTW, does anyone know how good is Holloway? she was a top 20 recruit but she does not play much due to the depth at PSU, cannot really tell what she can do,

Holloway played with Spicer in HS and at SPRI together. They won the JOs 2 times together, I believe??? Many people considered them to be the best 1-2 punch in the country at the time for their age. Holloway can hit, pass and block. The girl is good, however she tore her ACL before coming into PSU if my memory serves me well. She hasn't had much on court duty since before she arrived at PSU. As far as rankings go I think she was right between Dailey and Sather. no 15,16,17 recruits. Once again... all from memory.

RichKern.com has the 2005 PrepVB list, and Dailey, Holloway and Sather are right where you said.

Women's Volleyball Team Wins USVA Adult Open Championships Nellie Spicer Named MVP
May 31, 2007
The UCLA Women's Volleyball team concluded its spring training by winning the 2007 USAV Adult Open Championships over the Memorial Day Weekend. The tournament was played in the Austin (TX) Convention Center over four days.
Nellie Spicer was named MVP of the Open Division and teammates Ali Daley and Kaitlin Sather joined her on the All-Tournament first team, while Rachell Johnson and Meghan Schoen earned second-team honors.
Playing under its club name, Westwood, the team concluded the first two days of pool play undefeated with a 5-0 record, and gained a second seed in the double elimination bracket. En route to the finals, Westwood defeated Bameso and UDub, the University of Washington's spring training team in an exciting five-game match.
In the winner's bracket finals, Westwood defeated USA Red, a collegiate all-star training team sponsored by USA volleyball. After dropping the first game, Westwood responded by winning the next 3 to take the match.
Playing USA Red again in the finals, Westwood took its only loss of the tournament in four games, setting up a dramatic one-game double-final match for the championship. Westwood led at the side switch 13-12, and surged ahead to take the game, match and championship, 25-19.
"Because of travel arrangements, we finished with only seven players in the championship match, and they were magnificent," said head coach Andy Banachowski. "Our conditioning certainly paid off for us on the final day."
Jessica Fine and Jade Machado split time at the libero position and sparked a tremendous floor defense that was the talk of the tournament. Emily Clements, Elise Carstensen, Diana Douglas, Katie Mills and Nikki Jagd completed the championship roster that took home gold medals for the very first time.

This weekend the girls played incredibly well. They were focused, determined, and played their hearts out. You could see it in there faces that they were determined to win. I am so proud of them.

Spicer and Holloway won JO's once together...18 Open their senior years over Munciana in the Finals.
As freshman at 15s...they finished 5th. As sophomores...were considered the best 16s team ever at the time...finished 9th at JO's, got knocked out by a little club from Nebraska that had current Husker's Amanda Gates and Rachel Schwartz. As juniors...I know Spicer set the 18-2s and lost in the finals to SWIL. I think Holloway was a back-up OH on the 18 Open team that won with Maggie Griffin setting. As seniors...of course, they won it all!

The incredible defense by Jade Machado and Jessica Fine as liberos along with Daley, Sather plus Holloway being good passers and blockers, UCLA's defense will be incredible this year. Johnson will be less predictable playing a hybrid position as middle and opposite (too good on the right side so far to pass it up). Schoen and Carstensen are competing for MB2 with freshman Mills as back up. Mills like Johnson is athletic at 6'3/6'4 and if her learning curve shoots up, she might be MB2 later in the season. Spicer will carry the team this year and seems to be setting a little faster. Reminds me of the year when Burkholder carried Arizona to the final 4. Can't wait for the season to start. GO BRUINS!

I think you-all are forgetting about Emily Clements, the left handed OH sophomore who has a super quick, extremely hard shot. It is very presumptuous of you to predict Holloway as the third OH stater for UCLA. If she could not make it at Penn State as a starter, or even a DS, why do you think she will be a starter at UCLA? You are underestimating the girls that are in place, Andy B. is not going to just upset the great team chemistry that is going on. She will have to knock someone out of there position with great impact, so far she has not shown that ability to fight for a position. Positions are earned at UCLA, everybody understands it, respects it, deals with it. If you don't agree just look at Katlin Sather who had to work her tale off to get back into the starting rotation last season after leading the team in kills the year before as a freshmen. I have never seen a girl with such determination to get back in the line up. Many would have gotten there feelings hurt and asked for a transfer, not Katlin, she just continued to to work harder, she eventually reclaimed her role, and what a great job she did. If Austin is any indicator of what is to come, I say Holloway is going to have her work cut out in order to crack the starting line-up. Defensively it was said " The girls in Austin played like they were a big giant spider web, they got everything that was close and snagged the rest with the field of defense that they created as a team"... Offensively, they put shots away at every opportunity, from inside the 10 foot line to just finding the open hole.. UCLA might not have the biggest names, the #1 picks, but they have grown this spring to have tremendous team chemistry, one based on trust and respect for every members play on the team. They all know their roles, hard thing to come by in this age of entitlement that we seem to have given to many of our youth. I pick them as the Cinderella team, one because of there chemistry, heart, talent, and coaching. Two, they are all beautiful, well except for Andy, of course!

WOW…I wish you would not hold back and let us know how you really feel. I agree with one of your statements, being beautiful is a key factor in being a great athlete and team player…you are very scary.

Lets see why didn't holloway play on the outside ... hmm... who were those 6'4 OH that were the number 3 and 1 recruit? your kidding right? Don't even ask a question like that. Why isn't Janet Okagbaa playing at stanford a no 2 recruit? Why isn't Maggie griffin setting at Nebraska a top ten recruit( or close to it)? Because of people who were just plain better!!! The list goes on. Holloway played some her fresh year coming in for Kate Price who didn't really produce but was in there for defense and passing which we all know they need desperately. She then went to the rightside when Harmatto was injured.
