I had an Andy Rooney moment:
Have you ever noticed how Brandt "dribbles' the ball before she serves. I always chuckle to myself because it looks a little clumsy- like a little child practicing bouncing a ball. Then she tees it up and WHAM! the ball sizzle across the net. It's not a criticism- just an observation. She's a great server (and setter).
OTOH when Kaufman serves, she just goes up there and grabs the ball with her "man-hands" and WHAM - same effect- Her hands look HUGE when she grabs the ball. Again- not a criticism- just an observation. Kaufman's an effective server and playing well against good opponents.
OK- I'll go back to grooming my eyebrows

Tonight the Wahine played steady after game 1. I really like the distribution. Brandt still has a little problem with Sanders as from what I saw the sets were sometimes too low. I agree with the block of Aneli, Kaufman, & Brandt. That is a little scary, especially when the score in the 25's. I will give it some faith, but dont really know what Dave can do. It seems to work for now!
I had a crazy thought on the play bringing in Mafua for Brandt for blocking. Instead I would like to try to see if Dave can bring in Gregory, Simmons, or Keefe in the front and have Hittle or Jaime Lee do the set if the play continues. I havent really seen Dani get a block yet. What do you think?

Blocking isn't so much about blocking the ball, but setting the block in the correct position so your defense can position themselves around the block. Dani does this very well.

A great effort by Hawaii tonight. No real let down aside from game 1. Santa Clara has some key injuries, so they are not performing as well as they should have. However, Lowe is a great player and is one of those play makers that really help her team. She did a lot to keep her team in the match. Santa Clara's middle somehow woke up in this match. They didn't do a whole lot in the first two matches but suddenly became very active in this match.
Hawaii looked pretty strong overall. The unforced errors were limited after the first game. Since Hawaii only uses float serves, they really shouldn't have a whole lot of service errors. They are finally holding down their service errors but doing enough to really keep the passers off base. Santa Clara is a pretty strong passing team, but Hawaii gave them some problems as they moved their serves all around the court. They didn't get a lot of aces, but really held down where the setter could set her offense.
Blocking looked pretty strong and Kaufman has done a very nice job in the middle. She is a very good offensive player and deceptive in her block. She has a great vertical so she closes the block well and gets up a lot higher than opponents expect. Hitting was pretty good overall. There were less bad sets and bad shots. Now its up to the hitters to improve their hitting percent. A great win for Hawaii.

I nominate Jessica Keefe as a front row replacement for Aneli Cubi-Otineru if the latter becomes fatigued, and Kari Gregory as a blocking specialist for Amber Kaufman if blocking will be an issue, although Kaufman can probably hold her own.

Kaufman deserves to stay at MB.....she has proved that her quickness truly makes a difference as well as her quick arm swing. Gregory was never been an offensive power but I do hope Shoji get her in the mix because its her Senior year and has anchored the Hawaii blocking for a long while now.

This match was the best match the Wahine have played thus far this season. Aside from a few mental lapses, it was a very solid effort by Hawai'i in all aspects of the game. If Hawai'i had lost last night playing the way the were playing, I wouldn't care. All I care about is seeing them improve, and they improved dramatically in a short period of time. It's still too early to tell but it seems like this team is starting to figure itself out. I think good things are in store for them this season.

This may sound ignorant, but did anyone answer the question of Ferrell still being able to red shirt because she never made had an attempt? Or is she automatically in for the season when they put her on the floor?
I've heard a lot of positive things about her but never got see her play.

I'm actually not too concerned with the height of this years Wahine team... I understand they are going to be small, especially with Brandt and Otineru on the outside pins, but I think both can look at Kamana'o and atleast be encouraged. I think Otineru can hold her own, as someone stated earlier, it's about timing and form. As far as Brandt, I hope she can continue to soft block. If anyone has ever noticed, she does not press over the net, she just reaches high and tries to get something on the ball. BTW, Otineru is so not 5'11. Haha... more like 5'9 and then 5'10 with shoes. Kaufman on the other hand, isn't much of a drop off from Gregory because of her height. Kaufman is a leaper and she clearly can make up for the two inch difference. I still wish there was some way for Gregory to play, but even if she's the team's best blocker, Kaufman's gotta stay IMO.

I'd like to see Kari play too but she was not connecting well with Brandt. Kari is a great blocker but her offense wasn't there. Kaufman, because of her athletic ability, gives Hawai'i much more offensive options when she is in the match. Maybe Shoji can find a place for the two of them to play but he needs to put his best team on the court.

She might not be able to redshirt this season but I'm sure that she would be able to redshirt in subsequent seasons (other than medical redshirt) if she chose to prior to the start of the season, such as the redshirt year that Kahumoku took or the redshirt year that Arnott took last season. Consider this about being a redshirt player- the 2003 squad (Willoughby/Kahumoku/Duggins) practiced against a squad that had two redshirt players- Prince & Sanders- with Thurlby setting. No wonder DS was confident about the 2004 squad. Imagine practicing against 3 AAs all season. It ain't all bad. You're gonna gain some skills. (However, I do believe that Prince & Sanders were medical redshirts.)
