With over 50 girls volleyball teams expected, plus the national significance of this match, plus its Sunday game time, the Badgers are hoping for over 10,000 fans to pack the Field House for this Sunday's match between Penn State and Wisconsin. With almost 6000 in the Field House for last year's Friday night matchup, which had much less ramifications for the conference race., I'm thinking pre game estimates for attendance might not be far off that 10,000 target.
One of my friends locally in Madison told me yesterday that there was a crew in the Field House yesterday thoroughly cleaning the upper deck in the stadium. This will be the biggest match in Madison in years. Should be a good one.......I'm hoping the Badgers repeat results from last year's matchup.

It will be a no contest. PSU in three! ESTRELLA While I won't be surprised if PSU wins, I think a sweep either way is fairly unlikely. Wisconsin is a much better team at this point in the season than they were last year - they are hitting almost .040 better for the season this year. However, PSU is also much better than they were last year. In last year's match, Hodge basically hit .000 and Harmotto and Walbridge were pretty much non-factors. I doubt that Wisconsin will shut down all three of those positions again this year. I also re-watched the PSU/OSU match from last week, and while OSU couldn't pass a ball into the ocean from a pier, PSU still just dominated them offensively and defensively. I don't recall seeing a match with so many six-packs and 10ft line bounces in a long time. If Wilson and Brown contribute well for PSU this weekend, the Badgers are in a lot of trouble. If UW can shut down either Hodge or Fawcett and keep the Lions passing off enough so that Harmotto isn't a huge factor then they will have a chance. The Badgers also need to pass well and get their middles to put the ball away consistently so the offense doesn't become all outside hitter oriented.

This is the best match of the year in my opinion, because it is a conference match of rivals, in a great venue, with a big crowd. This match will have a major impact on polls, seeding, and not to mention the Big Ten. If UW should win, they could and should leapfrog a few pretenders in the top 5. If PSU wins (I think they will) they will solidify themselves as a 2 seed.

I too think a sweep is unlikely by either team.
Wisconsin will have the benefit of a great home crowd, playing in a place they are simply tough to beat. On the other hand, this is probably Penn State's best team in years, and to some degree more experienced than last year (though not Wilson and Brown).
PSU has played a lot of home games so far, so it will be interesting to see how they adjust to a large, vocal crowd as the visiting team.
I remember than PSU had a very difficult time with ball control in last year's match, particularly Hodge. Both Carlini and Reineke had great matches, and Simpson was really on her game, while Glass was not. I don't expect Harmatto to be a non factor this year (too much to hope for), and I agree with keystone that this match is easily one of the biggest matches nationally so far this season.
No surprise that I think the Badgers will win this one, but it honestly could go either way. Regardless of what happens, the rematch will only be a month away......

A thing to consider here is both teams need to take care of their business Friday night. Regardless of their conference position right now, OSU is always dangerous and capable of elevating their game on a given night. And Illinois can be a real pain in Huff Hall, where there is sure to be another big crowd. Who can forget their upset of a great USC team from a few years ago, to break the Trojan's long unbeaten streak?

Tough to Win at Wisconsin... I take Wisconsin in 4. Penn State on paper should win this but my buck is on Wisconsin.

I'd say the Badgers have no chance except for what they did last year. They obviously match up well or something. Or last year was a fluke. Because they don't have the talent of PSU.
If they can pass, and therefore make the Badger block have to move, this one's over. If the Badgers can serve tough, it could get interesting. All that extra space in the Fieldhouse can, sometimes, make the Badger servers even better than they would be normally.

At only $5 a ticket I'm surprised that there won't be more show up. I wonder how many true fans would show up if UW charged what NU or Hawaii do for tickets.

Let's remember that what Hawaii and Nebraska do are still exceptions to the rule. If any school can get 10,000 people to come to a volleyball match, even if they charged free admission, than good for them. The more people are exposed to volleyball, the more chances there are for them to be transformed from a casual observer to a true volleyball fan, paying regular prices to attend many matches.

plus the national significance of this match, How can this be a match of National significance when the Big 10 has won a total of 1 measly National Title in its HISTORY? It doesn't matter who wins or loses because both teams will be losers in the NCAA tourney later on in the year, just as always. If you have statistical records to disprove what I am saying as fact, please post them or shut up.

Having 50 girls teams running around sounds like not fun for the accompanying adults. I sure wish Comcast would get a clue and add the BTN!!! argh.
