I don't see how it could be strategic, she's gotta be hurt... but I really hope she's not. I don't see how just setting the pins will work against stanford. Especially with Aneli not 100%. That's exactly why it could be a strategic move for THIS match. Setting the pins was getting it done. Illinois' big middle leads the country in blocks. Amber is not a good blocking middle. He likely traded middle offense for good middle defense, knowing the outsides for UH were dominating. I agree with you, tomorrow is a whole new match. I expect to see Kaufmann. UNLESS, she really is injured. I believe this was a strategic move on Dave's part. He rested Kaufmann, got good defense in the middle at the net, and got all the offense he needed. You know what, you could be exactly right. I didn't really think about it that way. The pins were indeed getting the job done and the middle blocking certainly help with Forsyth filling in. She got some needed roofs and important times. I HOPE that if this is true, that Kaufman is rested by tomorrow. Like I mentioned, we NEED HER NO DOUBT to move on.

According to the Star Bulletin, Kaufman did re-aggravate her abdominal strain in the middle of set 1.

I agree with dd2000, Shoji sacrificed the middle attack in Kaufman for the blocking of Forsythe because the outsides were getting it done. But I also think Kaufman is injured so his reasoning was, at the very least, we could get a better blocking...

OMG, this definitely doesn't look good at all. Forsyth can block, but without offense....we could definitely be in deep trouble tomorrow.

An excerpt from the Honolulu Advertiser: "All-conference middle Amber Kaufman came out near the end of the first after aggravating her abdominal strain. She did not return for Hawai'i. ... Kaufman came out in the midst of a UH mini-rally that cut the Illini's deficit to 23-21 and she did not play again, sitting on the bench in tears before she was taken to the locker room." Hawaii will need her offense to assis the OH's because in that rotation where it is Kaufman, Mafua, Otineru, Hawaii stuggles. If Hawaii doesn't pass well, Mafua has only one option in the front row, sometimes, if the pass is off the net, she'll back set it to Kaufman because kaufman is athletic enough to reach it. Forsythe is not athletic. Forsythe needs to have some sort of offensive threat in the middle or Danielson will need to be ready from the back row. I hope this isn't the last of kaufman.

Wow, Hewitt also came up really BIG. Congrats to her.
What I didn't get is why was she serving and playing in the back. in the third game, at 24-24, she missed a shot her way which was very critical. I'm not too sure how that was strategic on Shoji's part.

well... let's have faith in Forsythe. She has made some good plays in tonight's match. I know that all the girls are talking it with the coaches on what needs to be done tomorrow.

I think because Kaahihue serves for forsythe, or maybe at that point he was out of substitutions with the double sub of lee/danielson and ferrel/Brandt. Is there another DS to put in to serve for Hewitt..or he didn't want to lose a substitution.

so.... here's the question now? Who do we want hawaii to play??? Michigan or Stanford??? I'd pick Michigan, since the last time Hawaii played them, Michigan beat Hawaii in Hawaii. You're right! besides, it's the same exact girls on the court like last time

Forsythe was very effective in hitting whenever she came in during the season. Was surprised when she was not set that much, Admittedly when she was set her balls were being picked up by Illinois. Proud of Cubi-Otineru; she really came up strong at the end of the match. Surprised she hit .290 because Michigan was, at the beginning of the match, picking up everything she hit. She is such a tough and gritty player.

Cascioppo is an outside hitter not a middle blocker
