Wow, I never thought people would be so upset over such a good hire. Just about every school in the country would give up their entire budget to have him as their coach, and you are all upset over 1 1/2 years of him working for the Olympic team. Just sad people. What you fail to remember is that he has very qualified people in place to keep the team running well. What kid isnt going to want to say 'Im going to play for coach McCutcheon!'? Just about every kid in the country will, thats who. So before you all get your panties in a bunch (no pun intended, so mango back off) why dont you count your blessings and thank your powers that be that YOUR school took their time and found a QUALITY coach! Unlike some of the other schools out there that seem to take their time, and drop the ball with whom they are hiring... YOU (gopher fans) are the lucky ones.

It's not "people," it's one person, a person who is primarily upset because his unqualified candidate wasn't even considered.
To answer his question, however, yes ANY program would gladly wait 1 1/2 years for a comparable basketball or football coach. Minnesota certainly would.

Please don't include me in with the people who are unhappy with this. I am EXTREMELY pleased with this hire, even if we have to wait awhile. I was just bringing up the point that juggling two responsibilities could perhaps be a lot to ask, so maybe he would consider coming to MN early.

You lost one of the top half dozen coaches in the country and you hired one of the top half dozen coaches in the country. Yes you have to wait 1.5 years for him, but he is head and shoulders above any of the alternatives I saw mentioned here. Not that some of them are not very good coaches, but none have established themselves in that elite group.

So Joe Paterno announces his retirement, and after a couple months of rumors and wild speculation, it is announced that the team's strength and conditioning coach is going to become the interim head for two years, at which point Bill Belichick will be taking the job. And all those future recruits will want to play for someone with a big name but zero experience coaching college men's football, and in the meantime the juniors, seniors, and incoming freshmen are still going to respect and play hard for the weight room coach.

Laura Bush is hardly the equivalent of PSU's weight room coach, but the answer is emphatically yes, they would. And Joe Paterno? Please. You could give a much better example than someone who has already stayed 20 years longer than he should have.
And it's one year, not two.

He has done an admirable job with the US men's program and the proof of the women's job is still yet to be determined.

Blah, blah, blah. Name one person they could have hired who even comes close to McCutcheon.
They got the best available candidate. Period. Could he flop? Sure he could. That doesn't change the fact it was a great hire and a 1 1/2 year wait is well worth it.

So..nobody seems to mention that recruiting and rules for playing for the national team IS different from the womans college game ?? Nobody but me feels it is demeaning for our school to have to accept HIS terms of employment Nobody but me feels that the Uof M has dropped the ball on coaching and recruiting as in football ..basketball..hockey.. You're all on board with accepting these terms going forward in a division where finishing 5 will be considered good ?? All I wanted is to PUSH the program to greatness..not allow it to be comfortable with the past successes of a retired great coach. Hiring a NAME is great..and I still say he will not come here in 2 years if he is offered another dream job..say..PS.Florida..SC or Hawaii. All who will pay bigger money to get him.. I want him to commit NOW..be locked in and be totally and narrowly focused on OUR program..not anywhere else. That should be the focus of the AD and other boosters and fans as well as players. I just say it less than diplomatic as usual.

We know what you are saying. What we are saying is you don't know what the hell you are talking about.
1) This IS his dream job. Hawaii? USC? Florida? Get real. 2) You posted earlier than USC was a center of the VB world when Haley went there. Also not true. 3) Disrespect? The only one showing Minnesota disrespect is you.

So..nobody seems to mention that recruiting and rules for playing for the national team IS different from the womans college game ?? Not sure if it was in this thread or the other one...but it has been mentioned. While this situation is more extreme than most...a lot of schools have to accept terms of employment from a top level coach. This is especially true in Fball and Bball...and for a previous example from Minnesota, just look at Holtz's Notre Dame clause.
