He will not be the coach until 2012 Olympics. So who runs the show? It will be smart when he is full time the HC at MN. Estrella Should MN have passed on Hugh because he wasn't available. One can argue whether keeping Laura Bush on as head coach was smart given the strong list of candidates that would have accepted that interim position but hiring Hugh for 2012 was a great decision for MN When the coach starts the job i will say it was a good move....in the meantime it is not. Many things can happen between now and then that can put a respectable program disaray. Estrella

At this point they are counting with him and still don't know if they can or not. Doesn't that sound weird? Estrella

Why do you feel MN doesn't know if they can count on him? He has told them he will be their coach starting Sept. 1, 2012.
If MN had any feeling that he would not honor this they would have moved on.
Again, I applaud the administration for their patience to get the coach they wanted.

At this point they don't have him so it 2012 does not count until it happens.

Estrella Of course, these are the things that a school competing with MN for a recruit would say.

There are contracts and obligations done on both sides. Yes if Hugh has a heart attack it's a bad deal. If your sister had balls she would be your brother. How concerned are you about that?

Just to be clear, I am on the side that applauds Minnesota for hiring Hugh. I think this is a fantastic move for him that will pay dividends in the coming years. Yes, 2011 could be a trying time, but waiting a year is worth the wait for an Olympic gold medalist coach, don't you think? But using contracts as a reason as to why Hugh won't bolt (not that I think he will) doesn't fly in my book. Coaches sign contracts with schools all the time... only to leave when a better job offer comes along and there are no repercussions.

I can think of some other coaches who would have been great hires (CJ, Brady, Geoff, for instance, if they were even interested), but I can't think of anyone who would have been a better hire. No one who would have taken the job anyhow -- and, seriously, *that* list would probably start and end with Russ Rose.
The problem with instant gratification is that it takes too damned long, eh?

They should have passed on him. This is a disaster and could really get ugly...a lot of stuff can happen between now and 9/2012. Like what? What if the interim coach underperforms and the team tanks? Second guessing reigns supreme. Recruiting takes a big hit. Maybe a player/s transfer. New coach starts out in a hole. What if the interim coach exceeds expectations and the team kicks butt? Second guessing reigns supreme. Maybe we should keep her on. Will the players respond to the new coach? OMG she was awesome and now she's gone....and the players aren't happy!?!? Pressure just went way up for the new coach. And what if that incoming coach's Olympic team laid an egg? Ouch. Seriously, with this set up, the best year would be a ho hum, middle of the pack, bla, make the tourney and get beat in the first round kind of year.
