I think you are either the NT team coach or youre the Minnesota coach. The note he sent out to NT players gives them zero sense of what their future holds as it relates to him. How is that fair? You can't serve two masters, and members of the NT and Minnesota deserve to know what his plans are.

I agree that the decision regarding what his plans are right now - is taking far too long and is being mishadled.
However - this is a great hire. There are no additional risks with this hire that do not exist with any hire. Could the new coach fail? yes. Same as any new coach.
IMO, Hugh will do fine (as stated before - name a better choice that has nothing to do with the timing aspect). Players will be attracted to the idea of playing for the national coach in ONE year. Remember, he will be in Minnesota for the vast majority of the 2012 season. Are there potential transition issues, however, this hire is worth it.

I agree it is a great hire for the long term future of Minnnesota. It puts the current players of both teams in a bad position IMO. Coaches fully expect/demand that their players are "all-in", he isn't.

I have no idea what note Hugh sent out to the NT players. It seems to me if Hugh commits to being with the NT program until the 2012 Olympics are over, that should be fine for the NT players. You couldn’t expect any longer commitment than that even if he wasn’t considering another job. If Hugh hasn’t made up his mind, then I agree he has to do that soon.

When did he send it the NT players? The same time the press release came out?

When did he send it the NT players? The same time the press release came out? Just prior, which is appropriate it. For the record, I have no problem with him making the decision to go to Minnesota, It sounds like a great move for him and his family. He also has done an incredible job as a coach for our NT teams, and has represented himself, our country, and the sport with class. I do feel that as a coach, your team deserves to know your commitment level, and that they are getting all of your attention and energy. He can stay with the US, he can go to minnesota, he can go to Minnesota after the 2012 games, just let people know where you stand.

gopherbill, it seems as if the public has spoken, and your opinion is worth dirt. so, i suggest you go build a bridge, and get over it. i am positive that the AD at minnesota could care less what you think, and will not take your recommendations into consideration. the sad part of this is, i would bet money that after all this angry crap goes by the wayside when he holds his first team/booster/supporter banquet, you are the first in line to get his autograph and sing his praises... bet on it

Laura Bush is hardly the equivalent of PSU's weight room coach, but the answer is emphatically yes, they would. And Joe Paterno? Please. Amen! Anyone know for certain if Laura Bush is still active with her club gig? When she notified students that she was going to discontinue her skills clinics and training sessions, she also said she was going to fulfill her commitment to the club as far as coaching--she is the assistant coach of the 16-1 team. The club (Kokoro Volleyball Club) also just added Christine Tan as an assistant coach of the 17-1 team. I understand that she will also be giving lessons.

Thanks... hopefully DD will be playing against her team this weekend! (already destroyed a team coached by a gopher player twice this season)

Unlike many who seem to worship coaches as some sort of supreme being ..I see them as friends..educators..teachers with all the human frailties with both strength and weak points. I judge them based upon several points..These are the personal points. 1. Openness to strangers .. 2. The ability to smile when things are tough.. 3. The ability to accept blame when needed..to share success as needed. 4. The ability to have players leave better than when they arrived On the hard side ..The cold hard fact remains..IT is a business. Business is VERY good..with pay near all time highs. Pressure to recruit and perform can consume the weaker individual..some actually thrive on it. This is not High School..or 15 years ago when just getting to the tourney was good enough. Money is tight..and I feel despite what some think the school..the players..the fans and the boosters all deserve an "all in " commitment right now to excellence. If this is dirt..so be it..

GGBill hasn't been to a banquet or booster event in years.

Earlier in this thread, Bill, you stated that Hugh coming after the 2012 Olympics was the second best possibility, and that the first best was Hugh coming now. I would agree with that. I think most people here would have preferred that Hugh come now, rather than in a year and a half. But that is apparently not an option that was available. You can't make someone come now if he wants (or feels it necessary) to honor his prior commitments. So, since the first best option wasn't possible ... and since we have what you stated was the second best option ... why are you complaining ? ? ? ? ?

Does he want to or feel he needs to honor his NT commitment? If he comes out and says that, I totally respect that. He hasnt. I think he wants his cake and wants to eat it. My theory is, the NT is looking to see if they can get a top level coach to jump in now and lead this group at the level Hugh can. If they find that person he's gone, if they can't he stays.
