I'm convinced, Hugh is not the guy for Minnesota. How could they think of risking this program on such an unknown. I say back to the drawing board. Let's get a proven coach at Minnesota. Not some wanna be hack with such a flimsy resume. Please tell me this is the latest example of how sarcasm does not translate to the written word......

The fact that Minnesota hasn't announced Hugh's start date says they are still trying to work out an earlier start date than 2012. That's good news. Knowing that Hugh will be at Minnesota by 2012 will have a huge positive impact on recruiting. This puts Minnesota in line with top tier (top 4) programs in the country as far as recruiting is concerned, as hard as Mike worked at Minnesota that was never the case.

I think Hugh is a hot commodity right now for college recruiting purposes because of his current association with the NT. A year after he leaves the NT that buzz will wear off. He will still be a good coach. If you mentioned the name, Jenny Lang Ping, to 16 year old kids I believe the reaction from 9 out of 10 kids would be “WHO?” Agreed, and I would even say that many don't know who are the top coaches (or coaches of top programs) in college also.

Pretty off topic, but did Doug Beal ever coach in college - men or women?

Didn't Hugh coach at BYU? So he does have college coaching under his belt. And coaching is coaching! I am so tired of hearing that he won't be successful because he doesn't have college coaching experience. A great club coach CAN be successful as a college coach. In fact, probably better than most college coaches because they understand what it is like to train and develop players. You're right. But most importantly, Hugh will be very successful recruiting great players. Being a successful coach is first and foremost about recruiting. Why wouldn't a recruit be interested in playing for someone who coached the U.S. Men's Olympic Team to a Gold Medal in Beijing...and most recently coached the U.S. Women's National Team?[/quote] Well, if he has the personality of a doorknob (I don't know the guy AT ALL, so I don't know his personality), then he will have trouble recruiting, no matter how many National Teams he's coached. He obviously knows the game, but personality, treatment of players is HUGE in college. Like I say, don't know the guy and I wish him well, just presenting what might be an obstacle. BUT, I think this is a no brainer hire for Minnesota. He knows about snow (BYU), his wife is from there, he's probably sick of traveling the world. As long as he's successful, I think he will have a long career there.

I can think of a couple of very successful collegiate coaches, who, in my opinion, have the personality of a doorknob. In one case being a doorknob would be an improvement.

@ JT,, Why? Because I refuse to be played. I refuse to accept this idea HE is is the best hire out there and we must give him a LOU HOLTZ contract..before he even comes here. Um.. Bill? You said that he was the best. You said that the only thing better than Hugh in 2012 would have been Hugh in 2011. So, were you lying then, or are you lying now?

A little bird tweeted in my ear (okay, a friend sent me an e-mail) to remind me that MN had an interim coach for a year before Mike came on. I don't believe that Mike was the announced long-term coach at the time, but I do remember that Pam Miller came on for a year, and it was known that she would only be there for one season.
