My guess is that Arizona would be #2, followed by Illinois and Lakeland, Penn State for winning hardwood, Wisconsin and Notre Dame will be up there for going to the semi's, maybe UCLA??? Mark it down though, Oshkosh/Marquette January 30th at Marquette, arguably one of the tougher places to play. yea its one of the tougher places to play because that gym against the windows is about the size of a dorm room

Last night was the season opener for Santa Clara and Davis. SCU won in 5 after coming out to a slow start, dropping game 1 25-15 and game two somewhere around 25-19. Then SCU came back to win Game 3 25-22, game 4 26-24 and game 5 15-13. It was a great match that drew a large croud (considering it was a club game). What else is going on in the world of mens' club. Who are the contenders at this point in the season?

Cal got a BIG road win at Cal Poly, winning in 4. While I am still getting reports as they are likely sleeping as they got home somewhere between 2-3am, I hear all games were close (I will post scores later). Cal lost game 1 and then got the next 3, getting stronger and playing better as they went along, which is real nice. Player of match, Jake Rossetti OH (thankfully back from long rehab 2 injuries/April/Oct), with a close 2nd.....6'6"Ivan Kovacevic MB (we stole from the basketball team...with all Cal's bball injuries 6 at last count, I bet Ben Braun wishes he had Ivan this year!). Starting the league with a road win and one at tough Poly is a big deal out here in the NCCVL. At least we think so. Cal hosts Boise State Thur/Sonoma Fri/ San Jose Sat/ We'll see if we can put 3 matches in a row together, 3 nites in a row! www.calvball.1afm.com

I was at the Cal/Poly match last night. Cal clearly the better team. Cal's setter has D1 talent - good size, quick feet, good fundamentals, and better location on his sets than alot of the MPSF setters.
The big MB cal has is physical, but raw. He had a good match last night, though both hitting and blocking. The other MB (big guy with the moppy hair) is pretty good too. Their OH #2 is very athletic. That one libero they have (the dark hair guy) needs to can his running one-arm toss jump float. That's about the absolute gheyest serve I've ever seen.
Poly's team is on the long slow downhill slide from their peak about 3-4 years ago. They still have their Opposite who is a pretty good hitter, but the rest of the team isn't as strong as in years past.

That is a very interesting result between the Cal/ Cal Poly match. When SCU played Cal pre-season (granted Cal had quite a few injuries) SCU won in 3. In the Cal pre-season tournament, SCU lost to UCLA in a close three game match and if I'm not mistaken, Cal Poly beat UCLA to win the tourny. Cal Poly looked very good preseason. Were there any injurys or did they just have a bad match? Looks like it will be a very interesting season in the NCCVL.

Did anybody see the UNC vs. Arizona men's basketball game on Saturday? They were talking about Budinger again and how he was a great volleyball player in high school and how he was offered scholarships to schools out west, and blah blah blah. The interesting part of that conversation between the announcers was when one of them said "I was surprised when I found out Arizona didn't have a men's volleyball team." The other guy said "Yes I can't believe that either." I thought that was kind of funny.

Maybe if the Arizona AD heard the TV comment, he will get a clue about upgrading their club team .....AZ club is wasting all the pub and and upside promise they had built up when they had a scholie club program for some 4 yrs....would have been real easy to be competitive and get good players if they had upgraded then. The person funding the scholies (now out of the picture) was not on the same page as the AD. They still draw good players, and are a handful anytime, but they should go MPSF. ASU more likely to, maybe, with their AD a former vb coach/USCw.
The water cooler talk, which is always a fair amount of hot air, is that if either AZ or ASU upgraded their vball, the other school would too...they see each other as rivals of course.
And the further hot air talk is that if THAT were to take place, Cal might get things in gear ...The other 4 Pac 10 teams up north have MOR club teams, if they exist year to year...unfortunately we don't see them hardly except at Nationals....last yr only Oregon went....good Duck roster of players but without great coaching and a strong league they can only go so far. I think they come down to Calif every other year for pre season or Far Westerns...WSU had a run for about 6 years of a decent club team, but not lately.
I still think that in 4-5 years Davis might take a run at it too, now that they are getting their D1 stuff in order. Always a strong team with lotsa involved alums. And Davis wcoach Walker (AZ alum) would be supportive, which always helps.
further notes on Cal/SLO game... don't have scores yet...anyone else?
Cal... Raw MB Ivan Kovacevic, is from Laguna Beach HS and had only 1 year of HS vb I believe, so he has a BIG upside...he keeps getting lots better fast. (All League HS his first and only year of play. )
The other MB, is Peter Salatich, spent 2 years on UCI varsity, came back to Bay Area/ Santa Cruz native, and this is his 4th year, and he will be back for a 5th year. Yes!!
OHs/OPP not sure who played what as I wasn't there, Jake Rossetti/LA/Loyola HS/soph and Ben Capello/Sta Barbara HS/soph and Neil Cline/Laguna Beach/frosh are big time players even though none of them are terribly tall. There are 4 off the bench also who can put the ball down.
Setter Zack Kass, 6'5" soph, Santa Barbara is D1 level when he is consistent. He worked like crazy last year as a Jan admit/frosh ....and we expect great play as he is maturing fast....and he has CIF Section stud setter Fred Mclafferty /frosh /Sta Monica right along side him/ equally good just not as tall...altho he can jump and block 6'3" hitters at least. (Injured finger at SLO and DNP).
I project that the NCCVL will end up beating each other up this year...

(I had heard whispers of Minneapolis).

I absolutely agree that the NCCVL is going to beat eachother up this year. Poly, Davis, Cal, SCU and Fresno all have very good teams. I'm not quite sure about Sac St., but San Jose is putting out a good team as well. I think that just about everyone will have at least two losses by the time NCCVL play is over. The tournament champion will be whoever is playing better that day. Anyone have any info about the Las Vegas tourny, we're still waiting for info. Should be a great tournament for the different regions to face-off and see who will more than likely prevail at nationals. Looking forward to a fun, exciting year.

Dallas info can be found right under the Louisvile big type on the NIRSA link at the top of this page. It is in smallish type, so who knows how long it has been there....I may not have noticed it for awhile.
