1999 called and wants its drama back.
Both Brazil goals were controversial, US had to play a long time a player down, and Brazil tried to run the clock...but somehow the US finds an equalizer before the final whistle and then win it in a shootout. The craziest soccer match I've ever watched. If you somehow missed this, you have to watch ESPN's replay at midnight.

Hope Solo was awesome today. Very cool under pressure, I got to hang out with her last fall while she was home nursing her shoulder injury.

That was one hell of a pass on the tying goal.

Did Rachel Buehler get the red card for pulling on the jersey of Marta or for body contact? That was a close call. I thought both players were going for the ball and were not trying to impede each other except Buehler did slightly grab Marta’s jersey.

I didn't see the game, but apparently quite a few of the most significant calls were somewhat controversial. Not only did she get a red card and Brazil got a penalty kick, but then when the kick was stopped the ref decided to give Brazil a do-over.

Well any time you call a foul that close, it pretty much has to be a red card. A foul that impedes a direct goal scoring opportunity will almost always be a red. So once the ref decided it was a foul (and I think it was close, but I don't think it was a terrible call), she pretty much had to send Buehler off. The retake of the penalty kick was unconscionable though. Just awful. Amazing comeback to pull it out. I thought the teamwork of USA was key; when they went down, they really banded together and seemed to keep trying to pick each other up and seemed to believe they could do it. Watching the Brazilians throughout the whole game they didn't seem to have a ton of chemistry. Their plan seemed to be just to kick it up to Marta and hope she could score. Almost worked I guess. And Hope Solo is incredible. You knew there was no way the US was losing once it went to PKs.

Just watched the replay - or at least forward to the key moments. The one thing I noticed was that Hope Solo actually stayed on the line until each Brazil PK try was kicked. I thought that most goalkeepers cheat off the line a bit (and Andreia got called for being blatant) but I haven't heard of many who won't cheat a little on PKs.

an absolutely phenomenal game! my eldest son loves vb, but he's a fanatic about soccer. he played it in hs, and now refs. he basically had to pull me into the family room after church to watch the latter part of the second half -- we picked it up when it was 1-1. i'm so glad he did... a great display of both talent and heart by the us women! and ruff, you are spot on with your observation. that is also what impressed me the most in the entire game -- an absolutely PERFECT pass, just beyond a defender and the goalie's outstretched hands, perfectly placed onto Abbie's head. a magnificent, clutch play a minute away from elimination. never thought i'd say this, but -- just as exciting as any vb match i've ever watched...

You get that many American women, that pissed off. Nothing is impossible.

It was my impression that the PK was retaken because an American field player encroached on the box, but no more so than is typically allowed on every penalty shot, maybe just a half step into the box just before the ball was struck, and she was being pushed by a Brazilian. Hope Solo, I thought, got the yellow for arguing the call with the ref, not for coming off her line.

What an awesome game. Wish I understood/knew the rules better. It amazes me they have one official covering the whole field (plus line judges - is that what they're called?). Pretty cool how the crowd was cheering for the USA - doesn't happen too often. The women don't seem to do as much "flopping" and writhing in pain as the men.

One thing I find irritating about the men’s game is a player will look like he is near death and then when he doesn’t get the call he springs up and starts running at full speed.

One of the Brazil players did that near the end to run the clock...as soon as the stretcher was off the field she jumped off.

The ball can't touch any part of the arms/hands of a player. Offsides is hard to figure out at first, but once someone draws it out on a board or paper, it's pretty easy to figure out. An offensive player can't cherry pick by being upfield at all times to take a pass. There must be a defender between the end line and the offensive player furthest to the end line when a pass is made. That doesn't mean all defenders stay back, since any player can take a ball down herself without passing, and it would be silly not to defend. Or that's what I understand. As for diving:

I have a vague recollection of why there was a rekick of the Brazil PK during regulation. I didn't thinking coming off the line was grounds for a yellow. I looked at a replay, and Solo was easily on the line at the time of the first regulation PK. It actually looks like she was still over the line at the time she made that save. I'm pretty sure it was for the encroachment into the box.
