Not a bad list, but there are still so many more. Like, where is Hendrix? Is there a guitar player after him who wasn't influenced by him?

Game changers, I would probably replace Buffalo Springfield with The Byrds, but I don't think you can go wrong with either. I would also add The Beach Boys, The Doors and Metallica to the Game Changer list. Oh, and perhaps The Velvet Underground. I'm not a Hendrix fan at all - from that era, Beck, Clapton, Page and Duane Allman are all in the same ballpark (and all of those guys, including Hendrix, owe huge debts to Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry and Link Wray) - but there's no denying Hendrix's innovations and influence on rock music. So yeah, the Jimi Hendrix Experience is a game changer. Style definers - I'd maybe throw in Steely Dan and Guns N Roses. 'Course, it's all a matter of personal taste - of lack thereof, in my case, given my long-standing love affair with metal. \m/

Great additions. How could I forget Hendrix!!! Or the Beach Boys etc. I did this at work, as I was doing some crunching, so it was all of the top of my head.

Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who generally regarded as greatest bands because of their body of work and influence on other bands. The Doors also influential but not with the other 3.
From the 60's 70's, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Springsteen, Queen, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Bowie.
From the 80's / 90's, the Clash, U2, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Cure, Van Halen (David Lee Roth), U2 can be argued as greatest band since the 80's because of their body of work, live shows & influence on other bands. Of course, not equivalent to the Beatles, but similar in how they have changed their style.
Not sure yet if the 2000's have produced a great influential band(s).

Isn't that where most rockers come from? ;D Actually, he's the only one I know of. There may be more from after my time. Not many rockers also build their own amps, though. Bose also has an MIT connection. I suspect we may have been the only school whose main lecture halls all have suites of Bose 901s as the sound system.
