A friend of mine, Pat DiNizio, is the lead singer for The Smithereens, a really great garage-rock/power-pop band who had a number of songs on the charts in the 80's. He told me that after "Nevermind," labels told the Smithereens they weren't "grunge enough," and lost interest in promoting them. Seriously? You're friends with Pat DiNizio? One of my favorites. I still crank up the volume on Blood and Roses. That bass line was simple but really addicting. Pat's is a good friend and a great guy. I don't know if he still does it, but he used to have this really cool deal - When the Smithereens were touring (which they still do occasionally), he would also do "living room concerts." On an off-night, he'll come to your house and do a show for basically gas money. Plugs in a guitar with a couple of mini amps, plays A Girl Like You, Blood and Roses, Behind the Wall of Sleep etc mixed in with some great stories (like backing John Lennon in the studio). He doesn't need to do it, he's just kinda a quirky guy who loves to connect with fans.

Pat is a good friend and a great guy. Incredible story teller as well. The Smithereens have played with everyone from John Lennon to Alice In Chains, and Pat has a story about every one of them. the smithereens were a great under-the-radar band. pls convey to pat that their music continues to be much-enjoyed...

Nirvana - I have a hard time with that one. Just because their trip was so short. What they did was a bit different at the time, but I think there were other bands that had similar sounds. They just made it to the top first. They were not just lucky lottery winners. Their influence on the genre is well-deserved. They were like an elemental force of nature coupled with some real skill and soul. Lots of groups just thrashed their guitars and banged their drums hoping to sound like Nirvana, but none of them did. I kist have to wonder, if Cobain hadn't killed himself, would they have continued to churn out great stuff album after album? Of course, Dave Grohl has shown that Nirvana wasn't a one man band. I think right now he leads the best rock and roll band still in the prime of their career. The Foo's live stuff is amazing.

I don't mind when one of their songs pops up when the iPod is shuffling. I have a great live album of theirs (or was it a cd?) with an amazing version of Blood and Roses. And yes, I do still have some of their stuff on vinyl.

The timing of Nirvana hitting the airwaves and on MTV was prefect. It was during a time when it seems like music lovers were getting tired of the hair bands and gangster rap music and everyone was just waiting for the next best sound to come along. And Nirvana had it. Even though Cobain died shortly after making a huge impact in the music industry, the group has made a significant mark in music history forever. Nirvana's rise to super stardom inrock history occurred at a a specific moment, when America's disaffected youth inherited a terrible economy, a trashed environment, and shattered fantasies of nuclear families. Nirvana reached millions of people who saw themselves as outcasts. History today is repeating itself ...................the music industry is waiting and looking for another band for this time and space. Nirvana rocked the music industry into upheavel at a time that "boy bands" and Brittney Spears reigned supreme.

While I like but not idolize Nirvana, I think everyone in the world owe them a huge debt of gratitude for doing what you just mentioned: destroyed the market for boy bands, at least for a while, until boy bands or teen idols rear their ugly little heads again.

Kurt Cobain had killed himself before Spears and the two major boy bands of the 90s had released their first albums.

Boy bands have been with us forever, and probably will always be with us forever. Sort of like STDs.

No Spears, Aguilera or Backstreets, but the New Kids on the Block were going strong back then, and I think Nirvana shared chart space with Marky Mark and the Fun Bunch - who could ever forget "Good Vibrations?" I think I just threw up in my mouth a little, apologies. As long as there are tweens, there will always be a recurring infestation of NKOTB's and Miley Cyrus's

Would Fleetwood Mac, and Heart be considered rock bands? There are no licensing requirements that I know of. How about these folks, "rock band" or not?

Would Fleetwood Mac, and Heart be considered rock bands? Sure. But I can't see Heart being too high on many lists.
