For me it's a tie because they all offered something different...
Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, Stones, Nirvana.

and a second time, too... the fab four, although starting off in the blues direction common to early british and european bands, truly gave "rock & roll" a new direction when they went all teen pop on everyone (i wanna hold your hand, etc.). it was a very fresh sound, quite unlike the white american "rockers" singing songs derivative of the contempo songs that parents listened to. other than black american blues, the beatles' 1964-ish were different from anyone else -- at last! and to think i hated them then merely because my sister loved them (especially paul!!!)...

The Beatles are, imo the greatest band of musicians ever to strike a note. They did more to change popular music than any group EVER. Some of the production innovations they came up with still amaze people in the technical side of the musical industry.
I've often said it very difficult to limit them to just one categorical musical genre. While some of their music would be pop, rock, folk, some even country or classical, they are their own genre. Some simply cannot be categorized. I mean, in what genre would you accurately place songs like The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill, or Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite? Theirs is simply put "Beatles Music."
Having said that, the best "rock band" of all time would be imo, The Rolling Stones with Aerosmith running a very close second.

Too many genre's, too many bands. That said...
Most influential (and rightly so): The Beatles, although I think of them more as pop than rock, even though I freely admit that's not an entirely accurate description - The Beatles don't really fit neatly into any box.
Best rock band: The Stones, creators of such absolutely perfect rock songs as Street Fightin' Man, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Satisfaction, Gimme Shelter, Tumbling Dice, Brown Sugar etc etc.
Best rock album (from back in the day): Who's Next. Best rock Album (not quite as far back in the day): Appetite for Destruction.

Theirs is simply put "Beatles Music." This basically sums it up so nicely. "Who's the best" is so vague. In a lot of categories, things are deemed the best by awards but I personally don't judge music by that. When it comes to music I personally look at innovation. The Beatles music is so diverse that it reached out to so many groups of people that no other band has been able to do. Other bands have done some great things for music and taken it to the next level and been influential in the music we hear today but I think the greatest impact came from the Beatles.

How about Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band?
And they're not for everybody, but U2 has done some incredible stuff over the years.

This is like asking what the best restaurant is. Is that great little sushi bar better or worse than that swanky steakhouse or that place that makes the fantastic pizzas? Each of us might have our favorites, but they all have a place. Who here listens to music from only one musical group? My favorites not already mentioned include Roy Brown, Garbage, Marcy Playground, Joe Jackson, etc. etc. etc.
