First guess: they recruited a bunch of naval officers instead of volleyball players.

Second guess: It is just like "Top Gun" but with more boats and fewer planes.

They are sluting too much and that is causing the hitters to drop their elbow and so the contact point is not high enough and they are getting blocked!

What did you expect? A miracle. They've never been good. Give it time. They have a fabulous new coach. They will continue to improve.

phew! thought you were making some remark about their personal lives, which really are none of our business (unless, of course, they start running over people or some other legal situation)

Well, we'll see much they improved when they play PSU in round 1 of the tournament.

They won the Quinnipiac/Hartford tournament. That's improvement over previous years. They can only work with what they have. Once the new staff has a chance to recruit and get the culture of the program headed in the direction they want, they will improve. Considering the limited contact they can have with their athletes out of season, it's a bit difficult to expect a whole sale change this quickly.

First guess: they recruited a bunch of naval officers instead of volleyball players. Oh, and let me add, in the Naval Academy that my taxes help pay for, this is exactly what I want them to be doing.

Prior coach got complacent, ran sloppy practices, drove off good players and had an assitant that excelled in creating drama among a group of girls that have way too much other stuff to do. For a number of girls the misery from the drama and the exrta effort required to maintian their military obligations while being a varsity athlete outweighed any joy/satisfaction/fun that came from playing. Add to this lazy recruiting and bringing in girls that can't hack the academy so that they are gone by Christmas. Leaves the current coach with an empty cupboard from a player standpoint. It also doesn't help that one of the veteran players expected to be a big contributor goes down for the year on the first day of the first tourney.
All of the girls on the team currently are great kids and are putting forth a tremendous effort but the talent level is not there yet. They all love the new coach and the whole vibe of the program is very good it will just take some time for the coach to get some players in to help.
A few years ago Army got a good coach and that program is doing great, Air Force hired a great coach as well and is working on turning things around (in a argueably stronger conf.) with anywhere from 4 to 6 freshman playing major time. Navy's new coach will be great as well he just needs time to find the naval officers that can also play volleyball.
Coaching at an academy is a very unique situation and I think that each school has the right coach in place to bring the programs forward. They are mandated to win like other coaches are but they must do it in the confines of the larger academy mission, which is sometimes very difficult.
Before anybody gets on me about being critical of the prior Navy coach, I think that Mike Schwob is a great guy and I have alot of respect for the work that he did at Navy. I just think that he got a little complacent and let his assistant create too many unecessary issues with some of the girls.
