Not a lot of size on the pins on that roster, looks like anderson and Rooney will have to the "men" in the next quad Uh, have you seen Sander and Ciarelli play? I invite you to youtube Taylor Sander, or go to BYU's online TV channel and watch a replay of one of their games.

Against who ? Italy, Brazil ? Priddy is 6'5 and has a hard time killing the ball. Doesn't matter anyway, OH will not be open in the next quad

Doesn't matter anyway, OH will not be open in the next quad He may not have played top competition but he's 20, and he just won MVP at the Pan-Am games. The Olympics it is not, but for a twenty year old it's promising. Rooney is a good player, but it's silly to say that OH isn't open this quad. Ciarelli and Sander could both be better than him by 2016. I'm not sure what gives you the idea that outsides have to be 6' 9", but it's not true.

It'll be fascinating to watch play out; def end of the Priddy, Stanly Ball era; incredible run and hope the new guys can be as productive in their time.

I am sure we will continue to crank out international level players. The key to me is our setter position. We have always had hitting and blocking....we always will. But it took Ball 3 Olympics to really play his position well, and then we won. I honestly don't know who our next great setter is, but to me that is the key. I think our college game does an incredible job of developing players, and our men's college coaches are really talented... I have this gut feeling that even at 6'3" Shoji can get the job done, but it's just an instinct...

Some good points all around. One that I'll bring up here, as I've brought up before, is Rooney. He's not the answer. He's been in the program since '05 or '06. He's going to be 30 this year. His progression has been very horizontal (where someone like Anderson has been much more vertical). He'll be 34 in 2016. Reid is going to be 35 this year and is LIGHTYEARS above where Rooney will ever be. I'm not trying to knock the guy because he's been successful, but I dont think we want to try and "count" on someone who will have been in the program for 10 years by that point to be the answer for the next quad.
My biggest gripe about USA volleyball is something that they have no control over and that is the age at which the players start on the team. Holmes is 30 and this is his first go-round. Too old. The fact that the "next" crop of guys come into sight at 22-24 is way too late. They need to be doing it at 22-24 and be the next crop of guys when they're 18-20. Leon was what, 16 and starting for Cuba? That will NEVER happen here. Not discounting anyone or anything that's been done, it's just the nature of the game in the US.
A few names I'd like to see in the gym next spring (although the BYU guys do nothing but add 2-3 years to the starting age)... Shoji, Shoji, Menzel, Sander, Tavana, Torres, maybe Smalzer?

I think the next 2 years will see a lot of different line ups. One thing, I'm glad the team trains in SoCal now, that will make it easier to have players in and out.

No Ciarelli? Leon was 14 when he joined the NT, btw. I think he was 12 when started playing in their top domestic league. Crazy. I don't know how we'd ever get guys going that early.

Ciarelli's a d-bag headcase. Can't imagine why anyone would want to play with him.

He got signed to the top Italian pro league straight out of college. He's got the game. The only guy as good as him coming up is Sander, who's better, but is two years behind, and could still take a mission (Though it seems like he won't).

What ya'll doing to keep tabs on the young up and coming guys? The only college I ever see is the Final 4 on ESPN. Where ya'll going to watch these guys, or USA Volleyball junior teams like the one full of guys that won the Pan Am guys that was stated in this thread a page or so back?

I'd suggest looking through the men's/boys forum, there's a lot of stuff in there. A lot of schools stream their games online, and as for the Pan-Am roster there's an official Pan-Am site that has all that info. The internet is pretty amazing, ten years ago there was no way to follow this stuff.
