I was wondering if our school colors were black and white. The only burnt orange on the home uniform is the back of the collar, the small TEXAS on the back, and the miniscule UT and Big 12 logos. Like the logo in your avatar...? It matches the background of this site. Think before you make dumb comparisons.

Sights & sounds from the scrimmage

My thoughts on the scrimmage:
Cat McCoy is as advertised. Very exciting to watch back row and impressive presence on the court for a freshman. She made some fantastic digs and kept the ball in play when least expected. Based on her performance during the scrimmage, I see her starting Libero.
Kat Palladino was solid as a DS. She gives Texas options in the back row.
Mirta B. is still very raw and looks like she needs to develop more muscle. She struggled to close the block against their faster offense and didn't really connect with any of the setters offensively. I foresee her redshirting, especially with the depth at Middle.
Chloe C. had an ok game. Defensively, great back row play but was ineffective at the net. From a viewer's perspective, her sets and location were ok marred by some poor decisions at critical times.
Chiaka O. was consistent at MB. She was more engaged offensively than Hattis but I still think under utilized during this scrimmage. Both setters need to work on their connection with the Middles.
Pilar was a pleasant surprise. I think her season last year was defined by mental mistakes as a freshman. She seems more confident, more steady on serve receive and back row defense and a lot more productive on the outside. She made better decisions when faced with a bigger block, finding the seems and tooling hands.
Paulina P. based on the match I saw seemed to be too error prone. She needs to work on keeping the ball in rather than just whaling on it. I want to see her do well at Texas. I think she has the tools to be successful if she works on making better decisions during game time.
Kat B. She didn't perform poorly, it's just that Cat McCoy performed better than her. Same story as last year: serve receive could use a little more work, but defense is good.
Sarah Hattis improves each year. She excels more blocking than being an offensive threat at the net. I like her work ethic and effort and want to see her do well. I hope she has a breakout season this year.
Amy Neal looks much better this time around. She did a great job taking on serve receive duties and finding ways to score against the taller block. Surprised at her box score hitting efficiency as it seemed lower than I had expected. She and Pilar did a solid job with serve receive duties.
Molly M. looks more comfortable hitting from the Middle than RS, but was solid at the net. I think not having Molly at the net in the middle left more seams in the block for hitters to exploit.
Nicole D. is still not 100% but was a pleasant surprise during this scrimmage. Her location early during the scrimmage seemed off, but as she developed a rhythm I think she was the better of the two setters during the game. She's very nimble and fluid for someone her height. There were bouts were she made serving errors reminiscent of her freshman year, but I think those are mental mistakes that she'll be able to shake off as the season continues. I'm excited to see her at 100% and as she gets to be more comfortable with her recovery.
Tiffany B. didn't have a good game offensively. I know that she's still recovering from her surgery and suffers from persistent pain in her knees when she jumps and lands. I think at 100% she has all the tools to be a serious threat at the net. When she was in serve receive rotation, I was struck by how comfortable she looked, very consistent and a stabilizing presence back row. I really want her to figure out how to stay healthy and pain free so that she can produce at the pins. It sucks that she's not jumping as high as she could be when she's swinging.
Khat B. will have a breakout season in her senior year. She brings a big block and versatility on the right side. I think if she works on being smarter with her shot selections she could be more dynamic.
Haley E. I'm really looking forward to seeing her have a solid senior season. Not much more to say about Haley than what you already know. I was impressed with how calm and consistent she appeared during serve receive. I think towards the end of the match her passing broke down a little bit, but overall a marked improvement from last year. I know the coaches have been working on her with that and it shows. I expect her to shoulder more passing duties.

I'm very excited at the progress that Pilar made in the offseason. 19 kills (3.8 kps) and 20 digs (4 dps) while hitting around .395 and passing exceptionally. It's exactly what Texas needs in an L2 plus some.
I hope Jerritt doesn't spend too long in the 6-2. I just don't think we have the personnel right now to run that as effectively as the 5-1.

I truly believe Paulina will be better in the long run, but neither can play 6 rotations. Haley's passing is improved, but not great. I like McCage. A lot. Her blocking is solid and I think she's the best option in front of the setter. Not surprised by Mirta. I truly don't think Texas needs huge offensive production from both MHs. Just needs a beast blocking. She can be that. To me, it's six of one, one half dozen of another between her and Hattis and MH2. Pilar was a pleasant surprise.

Nice thing for UT fans is McCoy will only get better. She is a focused and determined player who works hard 100% of the time. Once she gets comfortable, you will be doing what I have for the last few years- saying 'Wow' over and over again. Also, Chi will take another step up this year. UT is smart focusing on TAV girls, because Ping and John prepare them for the next level. Wait until y'all see Morgan Johnson & Micaya White (Mav's first round pick Randy White's daughter). Talent is flowing from North Texas to UT! Hook'em!!

Is it looking like 5-1 or 6-2 to start the season?

Is it looking like 5-1 or 6-2 to start the season? They've been practicing in a 6-2 the entire preseason and that's what they will play in for all the pre-conference matches. If they are not hitting the numbers they want both offensively and defensively, they will switch to a 5-1 by conference time.

You think McCage is the best option in front of the setter?! For MHs....and although it's close, I still say yes. Chiaka is very close, maybe there by mid-season. Chiaka is much better behind the setter. I'd also say right now, she's overall the best MH, particularly in terms of blocking. You seriously think McCage is better than Ogbogu in the front and Chiaka is better behind the setter? Are you just mixing them up?? There's no way that's true!

The scrimmage was so much fun this season, love the new uniforms, great group of girls that seem to be adjusting very nice to their new positions where needed. After all the excitement of just being in Gregory again and seeing the team play and the smell of the popcorn, I came home and watched it on LHN last night--without all the cheering and excitement. Here is my opinion.
McCoy-YES, she's as advertised, reminds me of the Kisner days, she wins Libero spot without question, Brooks will DS.
Baker-her interview states a lot about what she is feeling and it shows in her playing, her defense is average but her offense other than that line shot she crushed at Dalton--the one Dalton popped up perfectly--Baker needs more time. Unless she gets it together and progresses quicker, she will not see court time unless it's desperately needed. I wish I could wave a magic wand for her because she has a great block and is huge at the net.
Prieto- heavy arm, she was injured during the scrimmage, that's why she was not jump serving, an abdominal injury but will be fine, just took it easy. She was having a great time with the girls and was all smiles to be at Texas and we are happy to have her. She hit OPP the entire match other than when she swung outside on serve receive.
Palladino- she's pretty good for a walk on, had some good first ball touches and nice "ups", Brooks out played her and I mean that in a good way---ball control has already improved with this team.
Collins- didn't seem herself, when I walked away from the scrimmage that day she wasn't the topic of conversation, but after watching on TV she wasn't as bad as I thought. Chloe played at Chloe--if a 5:1 is run, she will not be running it.
Dalton- looked great, a couple of miss connects with her middles but overall, she is the top setter for Texas. Defense looks great, she's huge at the net and turns on 2 with ease yet aggressive, only downfall, she is still 50/50 on serving--everything else, love me some Nicole!!! She will run the offense in a 5:1, she set all match long even while in the front row.
Chi- looked great, jumps out of the gym, blocked amazing, I see another all American year for her, connection will get better with the setters of course.
McCage--played OPP almost the entire match until the last where she played some middle, she looked good, great blocks, nice hard swings on the right side--she too was suffering from a minor injury to her abdomen.
Hattis--she had ONE slam and Khat bell looked at her like """WHAT""" with a huge smile...that's it. She has improved each year but is still a bit slow at closing, but when she does, she's a great blocker.
Mirta--slow, but will grow, reminds of PAO during her 1st 2 years at Texas. Mirta will be a huge key to Texas' success in future years.
Bell- Looked amazing, back row defense was nice, and hit a couple of balls from the D pattern out of the back, she will have a huge year on the RS (that is where she played the entire match), a huge year because Texas' passing has improved and the setting is not only going outside 90 % of the time. Bell will get a ton of looks this season!
Eckerman- didn't hit a lot of pipes, she had some nice passes and digs, but also had some shanks as well, overall Haley was Haley, McCoy had Eckerman's number on her sharp hard cross but I think that's because she defends against Haley in the gym, Eckerman will be up for NPOY.
Neal-not a fan, serving specialist at best. Cannon of an arm but Pilar beats her out.
Pilar- Other than McCoy, Pilar in my opinion was wonderful all day. She played outside the entire match all 6 rotations and has improved leaps and bounds from her freshman campaign. She wins the OH if that type of play continues, in a 5:1 or 6:2.
Overall, Texas will start the season off with a 6:2, the passing is possible this year to run it efficiently, Texas looks great and should be back in the final four again and in the running to take the title. If the 6:2 works out and they get the numbers they are hoping for then great, but Texas will murder teams in a 5:1 situation.
I wish all teams the best this season, hope all stay healthy and play to their teams potential.
I think on paper it plays out this way:
PAC 12--title goes to Stanford with USC on their asses. BIG 12--Texas easily , Kansas 2nd with a steady ISU squad--this may sound and look odd, but don't count out Baylor, they look strong. BIG 10--title will go to Penn State with a close Wisconsin team but Purdue and Nebraska won't go quiet either, if Michigan State puts it all together, they can make some noise.
SEC--Florida takes but not easily, I'm curious to see Texas A&M and how they handle a tough pre-season.
Other teams I believe will give hell on any given night: BYU Washington Colorado Colorado State Arizona State Baylor K-State American
Good luck to all and I hope everyone is excited! I can't believe it's already here.

Great Day. Just got my tix for Florida match. Have a trip to Austin in September but teams (FB & VB) are not home, so this is my one chance prior to FF. Should be a packed house.

Yes, it will be sold out most likely, and Florida has a home football game too ( I think). I was in Florida when they hosted the NB4, with Stanford, Texas, Florida and PSU. I loved the dome. A great atmosphere and the Texas Florida game will be a fun one to watch.
