2002 was a modified 5-1 with Carey and Vakasausau sharing a spot. Vakasausau started most matches as a back row setter with Nohea Tano at opposite. When Vakasausau rotated to the front row, Carey came in for her and Tano was replaced by Hedder Ilustre as a three-rotation defensive specialist. So while Shoji used four players, it wasn't two pairs of setter and hitter but instead, two setters sharing one spot, and a hitter and DS sharing another spot.
2003 with Kamana'o was 5-1. Thurlby, the other setter, played in almost all matches but only as a situational sub.

2003 - Vakasausau/Carey, but I'm not sure it was a true hitter-setter switch. Carey was in front row and Vakasausau set in the back with Tano up front. Wasn't it a 5-1 with foy Kamanao in 2003? Yes, you're right on the year. It was 2002.

You're right....did Shoji do a little experimenting with a 6-2 with Carey as a hitter in the front row during a few matches in 2001?

I think Shoji had Carey hitting some in her junior year, but in her senior year, I remember that she did not want to hit - hence that modified 5-1 with she just setting when she was in.

Yes, I believe Carey was playing opposite later in the season after she lost her job to Vakasausau.

it's probably a sign that fans have run out of things to talk about in the off-season, when the thread starts re-hashing setting duties from the early 2000s. ;-)

Cindy Luis posted on her blog that Kendra Koelsch will be the replacement for Goodman as the backup setter. Koelsch initially committed to play sand, but will now be on an indoor vb scholarship and will walk-on to sand vb. She's 6-0, which makes her taller than Goodman (5-11) and Higgins (5-9). She's the tallest Wahine setter since Jennifer Carey (6-1), if I'm not mistaken.

You're right, after Carey: (starting setters) 2003-2006 - Kamana'o (5'8) 2007 - Brandt (5'8) 2008-2010 - Mafua (5'10) 2011-2013 - Uiato (5'8) I haven't heard much about Koelsch. Can she push Higgins? And what happens if she decides to just focus on Sand (as that was her initial intentions)? Is Shoji bringing in a new setter for 2015 or rely on Higgins/Koelsch.

She's more strong at the OPP position, but has the setting skills to push higgins.
