I got to say the women side is looking fairly bleak in the AVP. The few names that have a small chance (very small) chance to beat April and Kerri are once again on Fendi/Brooke side. Nicole/Dowdy and SummerDay. Oh well maybe next year some of the missing vets will play after seeing the results from this year. The men at least have some good competitions going this year. I think long term they look a lot better off than the men. After rio there is still some good young teams on the womens side where the men look like its going to be the worse off than its ever been. After Bourne and Bruner there is.....nobody.

I am just going by the scores on the women side against Kerri and April. I know they are the best but crushing most the teams the way they do is a little disheartening about our future. Especially when you factor in the fact the last 5 fivb tournaments WalRoss has one Gold, one 5th, and 3 ninth place finishes. As I said I am hopeful that the younger teams will continue to grow. On the men side it will be scary after Rio due to lack of younger players for sure.

On the men side it will be scary after Rio due to lack of younger players for sure. The men's side has three solid blockers that should continue post - Rio. Ryan is only 30 and his game is built for longetivity (unless he gets shorter) I expect he could go without much drop off until he is 36-38, plus his skills will keep improving, hopefully. Defenders are an issue though. The female side looked strong at the end of last year, but with the exception of Lauren Fendrick, who I have been really impressed with this year, no one has stepped up. Summer/Emily have gotten worse if anything, Jen Fopma had a horrible year, same for Hochevar. Other than Carico, I dont see anyone on the women's side that looks likely/or even possible to grow into a top 5 international player. I know Summer has had personal issues this year, but based on her game, its hard to see her as part of the the best team in the world, or near it. Her speed issues mean she should probably be blocking, but she is far from dominant there.

What are chances that Bourne picks up Dougherty or Bruner and plays defense? He could if he was a libero in college i would think. Or is he that good of a blocker to take his chances on an unknown back row player/Patterson?

Bourne as a defender does seem like the move.
Does anyone know what happened to Fendi/Sweat? Injury?

Tri could be the next john Hyden(one of the best big man defenders) I think tri and john will stay together assuming john stays healty and make a run a rio. Tri is only gonna get better and already blocks a ton of balls.

I watched the match on TV. Walsh/Ross were up 9-0 in the third set when Sweat had to withdraw due to back spasms. A rather anti-climatic finish to a match that started out exciting.

Seen on twitter that Fendrick/Sweat were gonna miss the next FIVB. I wonder how credible that tweet was.

Watching the match, Brooke wasn't swinging at all. Not that she's a big hitter, but she does like to mix it up better than what was going on today.

everyone playing looked so beat up. I'm sure it's only going to get worse after the Polish GS & Cinci the next 2 weeks. The only good thing with the FIVB, they really won't play more than twice a day.

There is a picture from the first round match that Clary/Tourigny lost that serves as sort of a time capsule for how the game has changed. I couldnt figure out how to attach it, but its remarkable for the size difference between the players. Pete, who has also played a little AVP in his day, and Kevin both at or under 6'1 and the opponents, both look to be around 6'6 or so Cleary never even visited 6', maybe 5'11", but only on his toes. He was even short on the beach in the late 70's. So was his partner, Tim Walmer. BTW. Those Manhattan Beach Open tanks like the one Hovland was wearing were cool. Anyone know a legal way to get one now?
