With four matches left in Big West Conference play,...still hoping to see a healthy Hannah Mathiesen back on the court. GoPOLY!!!frankly, I'm more concerned with seeing Poly actually win a match that matters. Granted, it wasn't ideal for Crosson coming in, but the performance for 3 years have been blasé. He hasn't retained critical players who decided to transfer, setter duties have been a revolving door. Next year is really critical, he's got what seems like some solid young players, but have yet to see his teams 'playing over their heads'. Next year need to see some progress.

So Jake who's heads are Cal Poly turning ? 8-12 overall and 3-7 in conference.....I know they're a young team, but, there are other young teams as well. SDSU has as many as 5 freshmen on the floor at one time and they are playing decent. Since you seem to know about SDSU, what is the story with the starting setter situation?! Mathis decided she was done with volleyball, and walked away from SDSU and the sport early in the season. Also, SDSU has been going backwards for two seasons in a row now.

If,...Mathiesen plays in the last four matches it could prove a little dicey for the opponents.
GoPOLY!!!

Jake, can you please explain your fixation with a player who played exactly 3 matches against weak opponents at the beginning of the season, with a hitting percentage of 0.091, and has been out of the lineup ever since? It seems unlikely for her to work her way back into the lineup this late in the season, when the other players have gotten a couple months of playing experience. For the past month, the only thing you have posted on this thread is speculation about when Mathiesen is coming back. Surely you can find some other Cal Poly players to support, who are actually playing.

Mathis decided she was done with volleyball, and walked away from SDSU and the sport early in the season. Also, SDSU has been going backwards for two seasons in a row now. I looked at SDSU's roster, 9 freshmen. Five true freshmen, not an unusually high number. A couple of them get significant playing time, most notably the setter, but most of SDSU's production comes from a senior, three juniors, and a redshirt frosh (Alexis Cage). The lineup out on the floor at any given time isn't particularly young/inexperienced. Two seasons ago SDSU won 23 or 24 matches and claimed the Mountain West championship. Last season they won (IRC) 18 and finished fourth. This season they're sub-.500 both for the season and in conference play. And it's not like the MW is a killer conference. The Aztecs are not trending in the right direction.

this has become an odd thread - the subject one would think is Cal Poly's performance (or lack thereof), but in reality it is now an evaluation of San Diego State, and a constant MIA report on some player named Mathiesen who hits less than 0.1 %.
am I missing something?

I've been unimpressed by Crosson's in-game coaching from the matches I've seen (both last year and this year). There has been very little adjustments as far as tactics, strategies in-game. Perception wise that is. The team has some talent, and they are young, but every match win or lose, I am left feeling unimpressed with how he handles the situations in game. But he will jump up real quick to question calls/non-calls. The team overall is very inconsistent. They will look really really good off serve receive, followed up with awesome defense and good transition play. Then turn around and follow it up with some horrible plays that make you wonder what the heck they're doing out there. Hopefully that's the youth/inexperience with the players, but it's frustrating watching it. For example, this past Friday against UCI they would hold even with UCI and then go on a big 3-5 point run forcing UCI to call a timeout. Out of the timeout UCI would then reel off a string of points with ease that left you scratching your head at what Cal Poly was doing and thinking. Some observations regarding Cal Poly that i've noticed is... Taylor Nelson has really good ball location on her sets, has good chemistry with her middles. There is really no true Opposite/Right Side hitter on the team. They have Raeann Greisen as the one OH playing only OH. The other OH's split time hitting left side and right side depending on what rotation they're in. This is not a very good blocking team, even just trying to channel the hitters, and that really hurts them defensively at times. My feeling is also that next year is going to be a defining year. Does this team improve? The talent is there to get better and compete with some higher caliber teams, but the question remains if they will step up and do it.

CAL POLY's Raeann Greisen has received Big West Conference Freshman of the Week Honors (her 2rd).
Now this doesn't necessarily mean Sam Crosson/Co. are doing a good job coaching,...but, it is favorable.
There has been talk on this thread that POLY's true freshman Hannah Mathiesen cannot qualify for a RS season. So,...why isn't she playing? The leg cast has been gone for a couple of weeks.
Inquiring fans would like to know,...says Jake. Wouldn't it be smart,...if she is healthy, to give her so playing time before the end of the season?
GoPOLY!!!

GoPOLY!!! Perhaps there's more to being healthy enough to play D1 volleyball than removing a cast?
