I don't think Loyola will be better this season, but don't forget about CDM... I think along with Newbury Park those two have the best chance at taking a couple sets off of Huntington. Definitely missed CDM. Good call! They are definitely the preseason #2.

Nah, no one is upsetting Huntington. I'd be shocked by anything but another undefeated season. I think Loyola will be even better this year, Mira Costa will be back after a down year, and Newbury should be a contender, so long as they stay healthy (not much depth compared to the other top teams), but Huntington is going to be even better than they were last year when they didn't come close to losing a best of five match. Tournament play is always iffy of course, but considering that last year they didn't drop more than a set in any one match, and swept every single tournament match they played...Everyone else is fighting an uphill battle. How could Huntington be better this year? They lost both middles, opposite, outside and libero. Of course they'll get some transfers but won't be near to the level they were at last year. It's about who they're returning. They'll be better at libero and opposite, and while there's no replacing someone like Sander they've got two of the best junior outsides in the area to step in. The only question mark is at middle, but considering how strong they'll be everywhere else I don't see it being a problem.

They have 4 strong outsides in Defalco, Morrissey, Anastassiades, and Beatty. I wonder if they will convert one of them to play middle. No way you can sit 2 of those guys. Vaught can be good for them on the right side and Blake Diamond is a solid libero.
No doubt they are the team to beat, but I doubt they will run the table like last year. An early loss could be good for them.

This upcoming high school season will be a fun one. I think it will be a race between 5 teams. Heres my reason and top 5 preseason poll.
1. Huntington Beach- Huntington will come back to look for its 3rd cif title in a row led by Tj Defalco. The oilers will be strong again this year but now that they lost a lot of their players to their success last year, it will be tougher for them. the last two years their coach didnt have to coach them with the talent they had, i cant wait to see how he's going to have to coach this year. But then again Huntington will be the favorite this year with TJ, Josh and some other players, that look for a third title in a row.
2. Corona Del Mar- Cdm has everyone returning accept for a middle. I think Cdm has a great chance to win the title this year. Their toughest challenge will be getting past the semi-finals. Look for ryan moss to led the team and want the cif ring. The past years Cdm looks like they had a spell on them, let see if they can change that this year.
3. Loyola- Loyola has been to the finals 5 out of the last 6 years and have won two of them. Loyola will have to find roles in a lot of positions with 6 starters in college now. It will for sure be tougher for Loyola this year with the teams being string this year but knowing their coach, Boehle might have a trick up his sleeve to bring them back once again. Loyola will be led by Matt douglas and matt reilly.
4. Newbury Park- Newbury park has a great chance to become a favorite this year. With the transfer of Benson they will have a strong team. They just need surrounding players around Maki, Benson, and the middle form Bones.
5. Costa- costa will look to bounce back from a not so satisfying year last year. They can do it with outside Markland to lead them. Look for costa to have a well rounded team and compete in every game.

I think HB might be doing a similar libero combo as they did last year. Last year it was Diamond and Weiser switching off, this year it will probably be Diamond and Gillete. Ben Vaught can definitely take over the opposite spot, and if not, Morrissey, Anastassiades, or Beatty could. One middle will be Shane Holdaway. but not sure about the other.

SCVC 17s wins the first points tournament of the year. Pretty surprising they beat HBC18s in the finals. Congrats to them.

Balboa and Bones are under performing a lot as well. Hope those boys aren't burnt out. There were some teams just being content to keep their spot in the top bracket on Court A1. SCVC 17 played Seaside in last game of pool play with Seaside playing their bench. Then SCVC 17 played SCVC 18 and it looked like both sides were playing their benches. It was first game of playoffs, one match first to 25. When the teams flip sides I think SCVC 18 was up something like 13-4, but then the 17s ended up winning. Then they played The HBC who had just played their starters against Seaside and then went back to playing a lot of bench players against SCVC 17. Teams are just positioning themselves for the first two dayer in a few weeks.

Found a game of the Balboa 17 team on youtube. James Thomas makes them a lot better. Still lots of early season errors but they look pretty good.
