It all begins with the serve - UW kept UCLA out of system all match, as is shown in UCLA's awful side-out percentages (43%, 37%, and 28%). UW's serving hasn't been as aggressive as last season, but might be more effective. Effective serving sets up UW's formidable block.
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, however. Serving can be a two-edged sword, with errors quickly eating up any gains. Teams that have been able to compete with UW have done so by out passing and digging them, putting pressure on UW's serve, instead of being pressured by it. That still leaves them having to outhit UW, which isn't easy, since they've got the best OH in the country and run a diversified offense.
