Correction. He returned 5 starters, Strickland was not the starting Libero last year. So of the 9 players that normally play in a 6-2 4 were new players or playing a new position. So a 44% turnover. Part of coaching is recruiting and bringing those recruits in as contributing players. A 44% turnover, and the year the UW just posted Jmac isn't one of the top 2-3 coaches this year? ? Oh well, in my eyes he's COD (Coach of the Decade). Dude, having an undersized L2 switch to libero is not like discovering fire.

My point is that Strickland's position change was still another change on the team and there was no guarantee it would work out as well as it did. There were many on this site that criticized her play early in the year. I'm just saying, that with all of the changes, there were a lot of things that could have not worked out for a team that ended up being ranked 3rd in the nation and that Jmac deserves credit for that.

Jim is a fine coach and recruiter. One of the best, as clearly evidenced by his record. But he returned his four top scorers from a Final Four team, including the NPOY, another AA in Nelson, his starting middles, and an excellent setter. He moved Strickland to the position for which she was recruited to play, and then plugged in a group of some of the most heavily recruited players in the country. And UW didn't convert Jones from a middle, she had already been playing at the pins in high school.
He's certainly done an excellent job this season, but most coaches would give up their first-born to have the talent J-Mac has to work with. There's no reason he shouldn't get some votes for COY, but personally I'm more impressed with what Terry has done with a team that went 0-20 last season in the Pac.

Correction: the obvious COY is John or Jim. Everyone happy? ? I guess the only way to truly know is to have John or Jim coach AZ, Utah, CO, or OSU to know who did the best job this year. I think I could coach Stanford, Washington, Penn State, etc., not screw it up and get a high seed in the tourney. Maybe I'm dreaming, but give me their horses and I would do well. I would definitely need a new wardrobe. I think head coaches should dress professionally. I am prepared to be bashed. Hats off to the assistants in the conference.

I'm not even saying McLaughlin was the coach of the year. I just have a hard time with leaving him out of the top 5. He's done a great job with this team. I realize that if you snoop around VT enough you'll find every possible opinion expressed, but "Washington is overrated" was a popular one in the preseason, "they'll struggle without their best setter and very good libero" was a hit in the early season, and "Strickland's move to libero isn't working out" was still in favor as late as mid-season. I think he's done a great job. And if Washington's returning talent/top recruits are a strike against McLaughlin, I don't know why Dunning would be the "obvious" choice when he's working with one of the most highly recruited classes of all time (his juniors), including a returning All-America MB, plus Lutz. I'm not denigrating the job anybody has done (and I'd probably vote for Dunning, or maybe Kritza), but it just seems strange to suggest that McLaughlin's work this year isn't in the same class as the others.

I am pretty sure the assistant coaches do way more than we know (yes, hats off to them). What I would like to know is who do people think are the top assistants in the Pac 12, are any (that would want to move) ready to be the head coach of a TCU or Baylor (just mentioning some of the bigger openings I saw on VT). I have limited knowledge of who they are, however I am sure some of the regulars here know better than I.

Strickland won Libero of the Year? She improved leaps and bounds over the season but this award seems wrong.
