ND is not NOT the University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople (where athletics aren't that strong, but the music program is stellar). WOW! A P. D. Q. Bach reference. It's been a long time since I have thought about him. I have one of his CDs, but it's been decades since I played it.

It was wicked awesome! It could find the gaps between the tracks and play them in any order I wanted! Of course, that was a little less impressive once I, too, bought my first CD player.

I wonder how many kids on the current Notre Dame roster will be told to find a new place to play. Is Jim going to clean house there? If I understood the USA today story on the vote at the just concluded NCAA convention, then no coach is any longer allowed to "clean house". Athletic grants in aid may not be non-renewed for athletic performance reasons. That effectively means that the ND volleyball players who came in as freshmen in 2011 (assuming red shirt), 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015s (who are already signed and sealed but not yet delivered) are protected by NCAA rules. The incoming class of 2016, which is in verbal status until September, is at risk, as are verbals for 2017. I suppose theoretically a school could convert an athletic grant in aid into a merit scholarship, and still take care of any players who are willing to give up their athletic grants in aid and leave the team.

Notre Dame is not a school that in the past has run off kids who can't perform. What he may do is have a frank talk about the limited playing time that a player could look forward to. At many schools that would be enough for someone to want to transfer, but there are some schools, Stanford, Notre Dame, Duke, and some others where a player may choose getting a degree from the school they are at is more important than transferring for more playing time.

I don't know if y'all read this article on Jim but by reading it; it is getting me more and more excited for Notre Dame. I can't wait for the turn around at Nortre Dame. They're in good hands.

From what I understand, McLaughlin doesn't think in terms telling players to expect to have a limited amount of playing time. More like that they can have all the playing time that they earn. As long as they make the team perform better with them in than with them out, they will get playing time.

Of course that would presumably be a philosophy relative to his own players (players he recruited)

Of course that would presumably be a philosophy relative to his own players (players he recruited) I happen to believe he has enough integrity to believe that the same policy would apply no matter how the players ended up on his team. I don't know the guy personally (and now it's less likely than ever that I will), but if you really believe in the whole stats/cauldron type of thing, the very worst thing you can do is arbitrarily pick out players and tell them "you are eligible for playing time, and you are not."

I'm not going to look it up, but back in the 90s a Spokane native went to ND--highly touted--and became an AA (I believe).

I decided to dig this one up from the dead instead of starting a new thread.
McLaughlin has Notre Dame at 9-3 right now. They scheduled the RPI game pretty well. Their opponents are 90-66, about the 40-50th toughest in the country so far. Their only losses are to respectable teams : Michigan State, Purdue, and Coastal Carolina. Coastal Carolina has been playing really well lately and beat some other decent teams. Notre Dame also swept San Diego State, a team that swept Long Beach State and UCSB!
