I wonder if he approached Notre Dame first, or the other way around . . .

I know theirs plenty that goes into it, like weather scholarships are available elsewhere and such. There's plenty of different scholarships for students but what does a weather scholarship cover in rainy Washington? The price of buying an umbrella, raincoat and rain boots? LOL

LOL South Bend has had an average rainfall of 38 inches over the last 30 years, which is 1.17 inches inches less than the average nationwide, and 10% less than the average in Indiana. Seattle ranks 44th among major U.S. cities in average annual rainfall, getting approximately 37.3 inches annually. JMac had 3 conference championships, 4-final fours and one national championship over the past 10 years. JMac will have 3 conference championships, 4-final fours, and one national championship over the next 10 years (he hopes).

I admire JMac's ability, drive and ambition, and I'm 90% certain it's about the $$$. I just find the risk/reward analysis and decision interesting. But it's his worthwhile experiment. And I cringe at the thinking that in a day Washington's academics, geography, and brand are now somehow limiting, second class (compared to Nebraska and Penn State, really?) Did RR allow himself this indulgence as he built Penn State into what it is today? And why did it take ND so long to realize they're sitting at the apparent epicenter of womens volleyball? "Might" and "ultimate" is where we have common ground. Here's the things I think can be said with certainty: --- JMac has lost the recruiting battles for "the relatively few elite players" before, and he will lose again. --- Regionally Rose, Cook, Sheffield, Shondell, Hambly can all recruit their butts off, and they're not going away. --- The number of elite players didn't grow overnight because of JMac's decision to relocate, they'll get divided. --- The number of elite players in the midwest is growing, slowly, as it on the west coast and elsewhere, slowly. --- This decision is not some sort of techtonic shift in the balance of power in volleyball. Its a thoughtful experiment. --- It's not a fait accompli that ND womens volleyball will now rise to perennial contender for the NC. --- This experiment/ endevour will take years to formulate a clear result. You might say 3 years, I say 5. Time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. My vote for "post-of-the-year".

Someone in here said Notre Dame was one of the Top 5 WCVB coaching positions in the country. I would like to thank you I needed a laugh today Yes that was me volleyfan24, and I take it as a compliment that you laughed.

He is a husband and a man that has a good enough wife Seriously? A "good enough wife" I gave him the benefit of the doubt here, in spite of my gut reaction. I think it was intended as a compliment to a successful woman who was willing to make sacrifices for her husband and a husband who recognized that and was willing to give something back.

I am going to get hammered for this but in the last tournament game, he seemed removed a bit. I know you can't tell much on television but it seemed that he was irritated before the game commenced or had moved on? Just a gut thing .

I didn't notice it, but I think it's very fair to wonder when he was having discussions with, or perhaps had already mostly concluded discussions with ND. I like to hope that it all came about AFTER the Nebraska loss and at AVCA convention. But the departure of Debbie Brown was announced by ND on Dec 4, before the tournament began. I don't fault him, in the least, for taking what he either sees as a better opportunity or an improved family situation, or both. But I can't imagine any human being totally focused on their current job, while considering such a major change.

LOL Yes, I'd like more info on this intriguing weather scholarship. I'm just guessing but in places where it snows this weather scholarship probably includes the price of buying a winter coat, long underwear, scarf, gloves and beanie. Maybe even a ski mask. Over in Hawaii and sunny Southern California this weather scholarship probably includes the price of buying sun block, flip flops and shades.

It was sarcasm but to say that its one of the top coaching positions in the country is just delusional. Is it a good postition absolutely. To coach for a private school with a name, history, tradition, education and backing like ND few schools if any can match that in the nation, but it is certainly not the most desirable and to say top 5 is a huge exaggeration. The top positions right now in no particular order I am going to say and many would agree are Penn State, Stanford, Texas, UCLA, USC, Nebraska. After that there are a slew of second and third tier schools who are right on par with Notre Dame. Does Notre Dame have the ability to rise to the top of the sport and become a blue blood program much like the other schools already named sure but they have a long way to go before people start proclaiming them a volleyball school/program or to compete for ACC let alone NCAA titles. Once they can hang one of those banners up in their gym then I will be ready to call them a top program but until then they will be stuck playing catch up just like everyone else.

What have you done for me lately, baby!
I'd list Illinois as a top job before UCLA or USC (assuming factors like weather are not considered).
