What happens when California moves to the MLK weekend "for one year" due to the holiday! Now we have California, Can-Am and Chicago all at the same time. Where will college coaches want to go? I agree the same teams attended the Chicago and Wisconsin event. All we did was put everyone under one roof. On the plus side it may of saved money ? Now you attend one qualifier and not two in the midwest. I expect St Louis to almost Double next year with califiornia moving to possibly mlk weekend. We did power pools last year at Zonals. And It worked out great. The top teams got to play the other top teams the entire event. Power pools for earned seeds into the gold bracket are the way to go. Let first day 2nd and 3rd place finishers battle it out an win a pool and a cross over maybe and make it into the gold bracket. But let those top 16 teams do a power pool on day 2 and have a 3 day of amazing play as well. That makes the 3 day events worth while. Is Cali really moving their qualifier to MLK weekend or is that just speculation? What's the reasoning behind it? I wonder if it an attempt to keep Midwest and East teams from attending and receiving bids that would otherwise go to CA teams (assuming those teams choose to stay with Chicago or Can-Am)? Jan 1st falls on a Friday for 2016. Running the tournament for 3 full days would likely require them to move it to one of the following weekends or play on New Years day, not sure if this has been done in the past?? Since everyone would be back ins school the follow week, MLK weekend would be the next logical choice.

Looks like SCVA was played on MLK weekend up until 2011/2012 via AES, anyone know why they changed? would be interesting to see 3 bid tournaments happening on the same weekend an the impact it would have --SCVA, Chicago and Can-AM

So why would they, Baja 18's, decline the bid is SCVA and accept in Chicago?

Probably (guess) due to who they had on their roster

Probably (guess) due to who they had on their roster Pretty odd that they would have a proper roster in Chicago but not one in their back yard. But really, have they ever accepted a bid before? A quick check on AES over the last 5 years and I didn't see their club at all.

I was under the impression the National Championships were just that...national, otherwise they would need to change the name to the International Volleyball Championships which would then make it a whole different venue. Last time I checked, Mexico is not a U.S. state. I don't agree with this move of the USAV to allow teams from Mexico or Canada. They can play against our high performance USA teams if they want good competition or maybe to win a championship. Also, isn't the age limit 18? Some of those boys on Mexico's team have been around for years. I think some due diligence is in order! National Championships might be, but Junior Olympics have a more international feel. Is that enough for you?

Not sure what you mean, nothere1, are they going to hold a Junior Olympics as well? If so, when and where? Haven't heard of anything like that other than the usa teams playing internationally, which then ultimately lead to the Olympics. Could you clarify please?

Nationals used to be called JOs, or Junior Olympics. There are instructions for international teams to play. They have some loops to jump through. I know when I played in the early '00s teams from Canada were fairly normal to play. I don't remember exactly when and why they stopped the Olympics and changed it to a Nationals. But this is far from unheard of.

I don't think nationals is a tournament that should only be exclusive to USA Teams. I'd much rather say my team is number one in the continent than number 1 in the nation. Most people I've known that have been in volleyball for awhile call it Junior Olympics

Is it for sure that the 2016 SCVA qualifier will be the Saturday Sunday Monday of MLK weekend?

The IOC came down on USAV a few years back and made them change the name. The IOC owns "olympic" and isn't too interested in sharing...

Also, isn't the age limit 18? Some of those boys on Mexico's team have been around for years. I think some due diligence is in order! International teams have to do more paper work and prove the eligibility of their players more so then American club teams at Nationals. The reason some of those boys have been around for years is that Baja only has 18s, 16s, and 14s teams. Half of Baja's 18s are really 17s players playing up, same for the 16s with half the team being 15s. This is how they are so consistent from year to year. Baja's teams are usually playing in international tournaments around the time of Nationals , maybe they had an open weekend on their schedule.

There have been a number of Canadian teams who have played in JO's or JNC's are they are now called. So as long as a team /club goes to a qualifier and the paperwork is approved they are eligible.
